Director, Software Engineering (Loans Lifecycle)
The Loans Lifecycle engineering organization at Affirm is seeking a Director to lead the Loans Platform, Ledger Engineering, and Financial Reporting teams. Key responsibilities include setting the vision, driving execution, defining and executing the technical roadmap, ensuring financial accuracy and regulatory compliance, and balancing product expansion with foundational platform investments.
About the role
This role requires 15+ years of relevant experience in software engineering, 3+ years of experience managing managers, and a successful track record driving key outcomes that drive the company's success. The ideal candidate should have domain knowledge in financial systems, lending, accounting, or fintech, and experience leading multiple engineering teams spanning backend services and big data/batch pipelines.
Responsibilities
- Set the vision and drive execution for the Loans Lifecycle engineering organization
- Define and execute the technical roadmap for service-oriented decomposition, platform scalability, and database architecture evolution
- Partner with Accounting, Finance, Capital Markets, Product, and Compliance to ensure financial accuracy and regulatory compliance
- Balance product expansion efforts with foundational platform investments in reliability, correctness, speed, and operational efficiency
- Drive operational excellence across large-scale batch pipelines and online services, establishing robust incident response, pipeline SLA management, and reconciliation processes
- Run a robust development lifecycle, including continuing agency adoption and acceleration, while improving a culture of operational excellence
- Hire, develop, and retain a high-performing, globally distributed engineering team across multiple sub-teams and technical disciplines
Requirements
- Experience leading multiple engineering teams spanning backend services and big data/batch pipelines
- Comfortable partnering across disciplines and influencing across a wide variety of leaders
- Experience hiring, growing, and retaining talent
- Strong technical depth in distributed systems, data-intensive applications, and database architecture at scale
Qualifications
- 3+ years managing managers with a track record of high quality manager development
- 15+ years of relevant experience in software engineering
- Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field
