About the role
HASI is currently seeking a Director or Senior Director with significant renewable financing experience to join our Investment Team in Annapolis, MD or New York, NY. This individual will be a senior member of the Behind-The-Meter team and will lead origination, structuring, negotiation, and execution of sustainability-focused investments in distributed generation, solar, storage, and energy efficiency projects. This role is expected to function as a transaction leader and, at the Senior Director level, as a business lead within assigned markets or client segments.
Responsibilities
- Lead transaction execution and due diligence processes for investments in distributed generation, solar, storage, energy efficiency, and related portfolios.
- Analyze underlying project agreements with a high degree of precision to validate key assumptions.
- Lead structuring of new investments, including development and negotiation of term sheets, key economic terms, and definitive transaction documents.
- Evaluate risk-return characteristics of opportunities using HASI performance metrics and sound commercial judgment.
- Build, review, and direct financial models, including project operating pro formas and portfolio models, to analyze investment opportunities, structure transactions, and assess risk.
- Lead lean deal teams through the full investment process, including initial qualification, client engagement, internal approvals, diligence, documentation, and closing.
- Prepare, review, and present internal investment materials that clearly articulate strategic rationale, economics, governance terms, material risks, and mitigants.
- Lead internal discussions with senior management and investment committees in a composed, concise, and commercially grounded manner.
- Ensure effective cross-functional execution by coordinating with legal, risk, portfolio management, accounting, treasury, and operations partners, with a focus on clear communication and “no surprises.”
- Partner closely with Portfolio Management and Risk Management teams to provide investment expertise that supports commercial decision-making across portfolio assets.
- Support or lead strategic portfolio-related analyses, amendments, restructurings, or follow-on investment opportunities, as needed.
- Lead financing processes for investment-level project finance transactions, including lender/investor engagement, model ownership, due diligence coordination, and support for documentation negotiation.
- Support corporate-level diligence requirements related to underlying project and portfolio investments.
- Manage, mentor, and develop junior team members, including providing coaching, day-to-day guidance, and developmental feedback.
- Serve as a role model for strong transaction leadership, collaboration, and sound decision-making.
- Foster an open, transparent, solutions-oriented, and high-performance team environment.
- At the Senior Director level, help drive team priorities, resourcing, workflow, and broader strategic initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution; CFA and/or MBA preferred.
- 12+ years of experience in finance working on renewable energy or infrastructure transactions, ideally with ample exposure to tax equity, project finance, structured debt, or equity finance.
- Experience in modeling structured debt and equity investments, including intimate knowledge of tax equity partnership flip and lease models for wind and/or solar assets.
- Strong track record of leading multiple complex transactions through the full deal cycle with limited or no oversight.
- Significant experience structuring and negotiating structured debt and equity investments.
- Advanced financial modeling experience, including structured debt and equity investments, with deep knowledge of tax equity partnership flip and lease models for solar and/or wind assets.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and align views across functions and senior stakeholders to advance new structures, markets, or client opportunities.
- Proven business development and origination experience with top-tier clients, developers, sponsors, and/or financial institutions.
- Experience engaging directly with senior client decision-makers and representing a firm in market-facing settings.
- Prior people management or demonstrated transaction-team leadership experience strongly preferred.
