About the Role

The Safety Director oversees Corporate Safety and Health (S&H) Programs, manages multiple safety initiatives, develops and implements site-specific project safety plans, and collaborates with Project Management to lead the Operational Risk Management (ORM) process. This role provides solutions to a wide range of complex safety challenges.

Responsibilities

• Leads development and articulation of the company’s safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures to foster a best-in-class safety culture.
• Provides proactive leadership to build a safety culture through problem anticipation, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and employee empowerment.
• Participates in meetings with general contractors, customers, project teams, and subcontractors to advise on project-specific mitigation plans, S&H training, and technical reports.
• Develops and implements an Accident Prevention Program to meet project safety plan specifications, creates site safety budgets, identifies safe work permits, and ensures compliance with project contracts and regulations.
• Leads the Operational Risk Management (ORM) team in reviewing, interpreting, and developing project safety plans based on client, owner, Program Manager, and General Contractor (GC) specifications, design drawings, and regulations.
• Develops processes and procedures to adapt Safety, Health, and Environmental programs in response to changes in state and federal regulations.
• Travels to work sites to assist in developing, evaluating, and upgrading safety programs.
• Maintains required safety files and records, including OSHA logs.
• Supports post-accident investigations and prepares reports identifying accident causes and hazards for company personnel and senior management.
• Represents the company in industry meetings and interacts with stakeholders to facilitate safety compliance.
• Partners with HR for claim management, workers' compensation, and Return to Work Programs.
• Supports Risk Management Strategies (Captive).
• Performs other related duties to ensure efficient processes, project completion, and smooth departmental operations.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, safety management, construction, or a related field.
• Previous MEP/construction/industrial and commercial Safety and Health (S&H) experience.
• Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 500, Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or Safety Trained Supervisor certification.
• Extensive knowledge of safety and health standards, regulations, and their application to projects.
• Working knowledge of safe work practices, accident investigations, OSHA, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance, insurance audits, workers' compensation, and project health surveys.
• Proficiency in conducting S&H training programs.
• Experience creating Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), site emergency evacuation, and first aid plans.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
• Expertise in regulatory compliance (OSHA 1910, 1926).
• Knowledge of Safety Management Systems (ANSI-Z10, OHSAS 18001, ISO 31000).
• Strong understanding of culture-building and leadership skills.
• Certifications such as Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) are a plus.
• Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) preferred.

Work Environment

The role may require working inside or outside, with potential exposure to extreme temperatures, weather elements, restricted or confined spaces, slippery or uneven surfaces, ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and other heavy construction environments. Office work involves standard equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsites in various weather conditions, including walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, standing, or stretching.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to sit for extended periods, including working at a computer.
• May require travel and on-call availability to address emergencies, delays, or bad weather.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally, including by telephone.
• Good vision (normal or corrected), including close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Good hearing (normal or corrected).
• Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) as needed.
• Ability to work 8-hour days, 40-hour weeks, overtime, and night shifts as required.
• Must work professionally in the presence of customers and their representatives with minimal disruption.
