About the role

A Director, Editorial Programming is sought to lead content programming across Yahoo Finance's owned-and-operated surfaces, including its homepage, mobile web, app, and push notifications. This role will own the editorial programming strategy, manage a team, and partner with product and engineering to shape the roadmap for push capabilities and programming tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own the editorial programming strategy across Yahoo Finance’s website, mobile web, app, and push notifications, setting the vision, standards, and decision-making framework for how content is surfaced, packaged, and distributed.
  • Lead the push notification function, with clear ownership of strategy, audience targeting, cadence, breaking-news protocols, and performance expectations, using data to refine the editorial strategy.
  • Manage, mentor and develop an editorial team across multiple time zones, setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback and building a high-performance culture grounded in continuous improvement.
  • Own the team staffing and schedule, ensuring strong coverage across hours, platforms, and major news cycles, and making sure the team is consistently staffed to meet the demands of a fast-moving, high-volume news operation.
  • Own programming KPIs across the website, app, push notifications and make analytics the backbone of how the team operates — using Chartbeat, internal dashboards, Google Discover, search, and social signals to drive real-time decisions, shape longer-term strategy that translates the numbers into clear takeaways and next steps.
  • Partner with product and engineering to shape the roadmap for push capabilities and programming tools, advocating for better targeting, testing, analytics, automation, and editorial controls.
  • Create distribution plans in advance for major news moments and company priorities, helping set the content vision and priorities.
  • Build strong partnerships across editorial, video, social, SEO, product, engineering, and analytics to align priorities, improve workflows, and ensure programming strategy is fully integrated into Yahoo Finance’s broader audience strategy.
  • Establish operational frameworks and editorial standards for leveraging AI tools to accelerate real-time headline optimization, push alert drafting, and multi-surface story packaging without compromising editorial accuracy.
  • Own programming KPIs across web, app, and alerts, embedding AI-driven audience analytics and recommendation systems to translate real-time data into daily decision-making.
  • Oversee the assessment, curation, and programming of the thousands of partner content pieces flowing into Yahoo Finance each day alongside YF’s original journalism, ensuring the right mix of voices, topics, and quality across every surface.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in digital news, journalism, or audience-facing editorial leadership roles.
  • 7+ years of direct people management.
  • Proven news judgment in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, with a track record of leading coverage through major breaking news events across multiple digital surfaces.
  • Strong understanding of digital programming fundamentals: homepage editing, headline and image selection, SEO best practices, and push notification strategy.
  • Experience working closely with product and engineering partners on CMS tools and editorial workflows.
  • Comfort with analytics tools (e.g., Chartbeat, Google Analytics, internal dashboards), using data to inform programming decisions and drive performance accountability.
  • Willingness and ability to support a 24/7 news operation, including occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends around major financial and news events.
  • Strong understanding of analytics and audience-development tools, with the ability to convert data into clear strategic decisions, experimentation plans, and performance accountability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence across editorial, product, and executive audiences.
