About the role

The Director, Portfolio Project Management Office (PMO) is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing the enterprise project portfolio and driving excellence in project execution across PNC.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the enterprise project portfolio management process, ensuring alignment with corporate strategic priorities and annual business objectives leveraging the monthly Portfolio Management Review forum in the Integrated Business Planning process.

  • Establish and maintain portfolio governance frameworks, stage-gate processes, project prioritization methodologies, and executive reporting standards.

  • Facilitate portfolio reviews with senior leadership to evaluate project health, resource allocation, risks, dependencies, and investment decisions.

  • Drive balancing of project portfolios across innovation, growth, cost savings, productivity, compliance, and transformational initiatives.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on portfolio health, project investment decisions, and strategic execution.

  • Partner with functional leaders to optimize resource allocation across competing priorities.

  • Evaluate project demand versus organizational capacity and recommend prioritization adjustments.

  • Ensure efficient utilization of internal and external project resources.

  • Assess project business cases, ROI, resource requirements, and strategic alignment to support informed decision-making.

  • Facilitate executive-level conversations, translating measures into actionable insights and learn forward recommendations for future portfolio initiatives.

  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, budget, and quality expectations.

  • Monitor portfolio performance through KPIs, scorecards, dashboards, and executive reporting mechanisms.

  • Identify, escalate, and mitigate portfolio-level risks and interdependencies.

  • Establish and manage a Benefits Realization framework, ensuring expected business outcomes are measured and achieved post-launch.

  • Champion adoption of best practices in project management, program management, and organizational change management.

  • Provide strong leadership and mentorship to a team of five project management professionals, fostering growth, collaboration, and high performance.

  • Set clear performance expectations and hold regular check-ins to drive accountability, progress toward goals, and continuous skill development.

  • Cultivate a “builder” mindset by promoting continuous learning, curiosity, and process improvement across the team.

  • Define and execute a multi-year PMO maturity roadmap focused on governance, analytics, technology, capabilities, and organizational effectiveness.

  • Build a robust succession pipeline through targeted coaching, structured development plans, and ongoing skill-building opportunities.

  • Standardize PMO methodologies, tools, templates, and performance metrics.

  • Lead initiatives to improve project delivery effectiveness and organizational agility.

  • Implement portfolio management technologies, reporting tools, and governance processes to enhance visibility and decision-making.

  • Benchmark industry best practices and incorporate leading project management approaches where applicable.

  • Define and operationalize measures across Portfolio Health, Delivery Excellence, Business Value Realization, and PMO Effectiveness.

  • Attend industry conferences to learn new best in class capability, process, and tools.

  • Participate in company-wide activities and events galore.

  • Engage in impromptu conversations with colleagues.

  • Handle administrative tasks such as calendaring and expense reports, and other non-value-added work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in Business, Operations, Finance or related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in the Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) or adjacent industry with direct Project, Portfolio, and Program Management experience.

  • 5+ years of experience managing multiple direct reports.

  • Demonstrated success managing large, complex cross-functional initiatives and strategic transformation programs.

  • Strong understanding of portfolio management, governance frameworks, resource planning, financial management and risk management.

  • Experience presenting to and influencing executive leadership teams.

  • Project and portfolio management tool experience (e.g. Smartsheet).
