Director, Pharmacy

This role supports a 255-bed hospital and opportunities throughout the service line, including ambulatory care, community mental health, crisis services, and cross-team partnerships. As part of an academic medical center, the program hosts residents and offers robust opportunities for collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh on research and quality projects.

About the Role

The Director will lead pharmacy operations across hospital sites, ensuring compliant, safe, and efficient delivery of pharmaceutical care. Responsibilities include driving strategic initiatives such as automation, resource optimization, financial management, and formulary oversight while developing and supporting staff. The role involves collaboration across clinical areas and committees to enhance patient care and contributions to education and research initiatives serving diverse patient populations across multiple specialties.

Responsibilities

• Operations & Compliance: Direct daily pharmacy operations aligned with patient care needs, strategic goals, and regulatory standards (ASHP, TJC, state/federal laws). Ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies; maintain safe medication oversight and distribution systems.
• Leadership & Staff Development: Recruit, coach, and develop managers, pharmacists, and technicians to maintain a high-performing team.
• Systems & Technology: Guide implementation and optimization of pharmacy systems and automation (workflow, prescribing safety, inventory, compliance, financial reporting).
• Resource & Financial Management: Optimize operational resources (FTEs, medication use) and analyze utilization to drive efficiency across service areas.
• Performance Improvement & Change Management: Lead change initiatives aligned with hospital/service line goals. Drive continuous improvement through customer feedback and process enhancements.
• Customer Service & Collaboration: Model professional, responsive service to physicians, nurses, patients, and staff. Foster a positive department image through respectful communication and partnership.
• Administrative & Compliance Requirements: Complete required reporting, HR management duties, and continuing education to maintain licensure. Adhere to system-wide competencies and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

• B.S. degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D.) from an accredited school of pharmacy.
• 5 years of pharmacy leadership experience (inpatient preferred) of progressive complexity OR HSPAL residency plus 2 years of pharmacy leadership experience (inpatient preferred) of progressive complexity.
• Must be a licensed Pharmacist.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in pharmacy administration or healthcare management (MS, MBA, MHA).
• PGY-1 postgraduate pharmacy residency.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC).
• Pharmacist licensure.
• Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (with renewal).
• Act 33 (with renewal).
• Act 34 (with renewal).
• Act 73 FBI Clearance (with renewal).
