Director, Perioperative Services

General Summary

The Director of Perioperative Services is responsible for overall operation, direction and delivery of patient care that promotes safety and well-being of all patients in the Perioperative section on a twenty-four hour basis. Development of process to promote quality of service, budgetary compliance and identification of departmental direction and expectation are key elements of the role. A high level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected, however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning. Reports to a member of senior management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversees and provides direction to the PACU, OR, and Sterile Processing departments.
• Maintains appropriate standards of practice and standards of care throughout Surgical Services department.
• Delegates to and supervises personnel, solves problems, makes decisions and develops systems and processes for successful integration and implementation.
• Coaches and mentors staff to ensure professional development.
• Serves as a resource to staff regarding specific skill demonstration, promotion of knowledge and communications.
• Independently carries out and is accountable for daily operations and other activities as assigned.
• Leads, manages, coaches, and trains a team or department, provides guidance, support, and mentors to ensure optimal performance and productivity.
• Oversees the recruitment, hiring, team/department orientation, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions including up to termination processes for a team or department.

Licenses and/or Certifications

• Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Master's degree in Nursing required; may be substituted with a Master’s in Business Administration, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field provided the candidate also possesses a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (Candidates currently enrolled in a Master’s program will be considered. Individual must complete program within one year).
• Minimum of five years of progressive perioperative nursing leadership experience in a setting committed to collaborative decision making and team development required.
• Professional knowledge of areas of responsibility to include theory, practice and administration in order to direct planning and implementation.
• Requires analytical skills necessary to organize and oversee work of subordinates.

Working Conditions

• Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
