DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION
About the Role
The Director of Transportation provides leadership and oversight for all district transportation services to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students. This position emphasizes administrative leadership rather than mechanical repair and reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Operations or Superintendent.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree preferred in Educational Leadership, Business Administration, Public Administration, Transportation Management, Logistics, or a related field. Equivalent administrative experience may be considered.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible transportation or operations management experience.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience in budgeting, personnel management, and large operational systems.
- Preferred Certifications: School Bus Safety Training, FEMA ICS 100, 200, and 700, CPR/First Aid.
Responsibilities
- Direct and supervise daily transportation operations.
- Develop departmental goals, procedures, and operating standards.
- Prepare reports for district leadership and the Board.
- Maintain departmental records and documentation.
- Coordinate transportation services for all district programs, including regular education, special education, CTE, athletics, field trips, extracurricular activities, and summer programs.
- Evaluate department performance and implement improvements.
- Recruit, interview, recommend, supervise, and evaluate transportation employees.
- Coordinate employee schedules, leave, and address performance concerns using progressive discipline.
- Promote professional development and positive employee relations.
- Develop succession plans within the department.
- Oversee bus routing and scheduling, including contingency plans for weather and emergencies.
- Monitor on-time performance and route efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and district transportation regulations.
- Coordinate driver certification and required training.
- Oversee bus evacuation drills and accident investigations.
- Ensure buses meet inspection requirements and coordinate state transportation audits.
- Develop fleet replacement schedules and monitor fleet condition and maintenance records.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance with the shop foreman or lead mechanic.
- Monitor fuel usage and fleet availability, and recommend vehicle purchases.
- Develop and manage the department budget, monitor expenditures, and approve purchases.
- Manage transportation contracts and prepare budget projections and state reimbursement reports.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Respond to parent concerns and transportation complaints.
- Communicate effectively with principals and district leadership.
- Coordinate with law enforcement and emergency responders.
- Provide transportation updates during emergencies.
- Oversee routing software and GPS systems, and maintain transportation databases.
- Analyze transportation data and prepare reports.
- Develop emergency transportation procedures and coordinate transportation during emergencies and evacuations.
- Participate in district emergency planning.

The employee must regularly lift and move up to 20 pounds, and occasionally lift and move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the physical, mental, and emotional stamina to fully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including the mental acuity to collect, evaluate, and interpret data; to reason; to define problems; to establish facts; to draw valid conclusions; and to make effective judgments and decisions.
Pay
$67,000.00 - $85,022.03
Schedule
235 days per year (full-time, overtime exempt).
