Director of Systems Engineering

About the role

The Director of Systems Engineering oversees the Process Improvement Department, develops goals and plans that support operational and quality hospital improvement initiatives, and fulfills operational management expectations regarding fiscal efficiency, education, communication, and community engagement.

This role directly supervises systems engineers and support staff, including evaluation and coaching, and ensures the professional growth of the team. The Director supports process improvement teams by advising on project scope and assisting with Lean/SixSigma tools and improvement strategies.

Additional responsibilities include developing and supervising quality improvement and patient safety projects, assisting in department strategies, maintaining the departmental budget, and continuously evaluating resource needs while maintaining relationships with the Upstate Community and clinical system resources.

The Director also provides support, education, and training on process redesign and improvement activities throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the Process Improvement Department and develop goals aligned with hospital improvement objectives.
• Supervise systems engineers and support staff, including performance evaluation and coaching.
• Support process improvement teams by advising on project scope and applying Lean/SixSigma tools.
• Develop and supervise quality improvement and patient safety projects.
• Assist in department strategies and maintain the departmental budget.
• Evaluate resource needs and maintain relationships with community and clinical system resources.
• Provide education and training on process redesign and improvement principles across the organization.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Applied Statistics, Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Mathematics.
• Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience.
• Healthcare background or experience working in a healthcare setting.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree preferred.
• Advanced specialized training in Lean/Six Sigma Black Belt preferred.
• Prior experience in an Academic Medical Center preferred.

Monday–Friday, day shift.
