Director of Special Collections
About the role
The Seymour Adelman Director of Special Collections reports to the Chief Information Officer & Director of Libraries in Library and Information Technology Services (LITS). The Director of Special Collections leads a dynamic department responsible for managing the College’s extensive and diverse collections of rare books, manuscripts, art works, cultural artifacts, and institutional archives.
Responsibilities
- Manage and develop the College’s distinctive collections, ensuring they are integrated into the curriculum, scholarship, and programming.
- Strategically plan for a robust program of digital asset management and preservation in coordination with the TriCollege Libraries Consortium.
- Participate in College Histories projects and Canaday Library renovation planning and facilitation.
- Contribute to overall strategic planning and management for LITS, leading specific initiatives and supporting the College's commitment to fostering equity, inclusion, and anti-racist practices.
Requirements
The ideal candidate should have:
- A Master’s degree in Library Science or a related field.
- Proven experience in managing and developing special collections.
- Experience in digital asset management and preservation.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess:
- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience.
- Knowledge of archival principles and best practices.
- Experience with digital preservation tools and standards.
- Understanding of copyright law and fair use.
- Ability to manage budgets and oversee staff.
Skills
The Director of Special Collections should have:
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with digital asset management software.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 annually.
Schedule
The Director of Special Collections is expected to work a standard 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required for special projects.
