About the role

The Director, Revenue Cycle Operations provides direction and leadership to achieve operational quality, productivity, patient experience, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency in Patient Access, Financial Clearance, and Revenue Cycle Operations supporting Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.

This role plans, directs, and oversees the performance of functional areas, including developing and maintaining metrics, implementing action plans, reviewing and implementing new technologies, and standardizing policies and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and monitors standard work across all revenue cycle workflows executed by VCU Health staff to influence achievement of revenue cycle excellence in the patient access space.
  • Provides vision, leadership, and operational oversight for all Revenue Cycle Operations.
  • Establishes positive, collaborative relationships with operational leaders and supports cross-functional operational duties.
  • Actively leads and/or participates in modernizing Patient Access Operations, including goal setting, tracking and reporting of metrics, development of action plans, review and implementation of new technologies, standardization of policies and processes, and development of communication tools.
  • Accountable for comprehensive and effective communication strategies that promote employee engagement, productivity, and morale.
  • Organizes functions through establishing clear accountabilities, delegation of duties, and appropriate departmentalization in cross-functional collaboration.
  • Develops and maintains an effective, visible, and well-respected leadership team by selecting, evaluating, coaching, and managing the performance of qualified professionals.
  • Collaborates with clinical and administrative leaders on projects impacting revenue cycle processes and workflows.
  • Demonstrates high accountability for projects and programs from inception through completion, including budget and resource planning.
  • Inspires and sustains team unity and engagement by developing, motivating, and guiding the team to achieve results through collaborative work.
  • Demonstrates personal ownership and accountability for safety by role-modeling high-reliability organization concepts.
  • Ensures responsibility and visible commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies, programs, and initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and participates in special projects to support the mission of VCUHS.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a closely related field.
  • 7 years of experience, including a minimum of 3 years of supervisory/management work experience in a medical office, medical billing environment, or hospital access/pre-access department.
  • Effective leadership of Revenue Cycle operational areas, including managers and their teams.
  • Provides collaborative direction of operations to staff at all access points for practice/clinics.
  • Standardizes services and creates an optimal patient service experience.
  • Identifies and pursues opportunities to improve operational value through enhanced service offerings, efficiencies, and/or cost reductions.
  • Responsible and accountable for the development and implementation of standardized procedures, processes, and policies governing registration, scheduling, and pre-arrival functions.

*Combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a closely related field.
  • Certified Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM).
  • Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP).
  • Epic Revenue Cycle application certification.
  • 10 years of related leadership experience, including 5 years in a leadership role with significant business impact.
