Director of Public Works
Responsibilities
Performs complex professional and administrative work to assist in planning, organizing and directing activities and assigned operational aspects of the Public Works Department; performs related work as required. Works with the City Manager to evaluate service needs and formulate short- and long-range plans to meet community needs in all areas of responsibility. Plans, organizes, coordinates, supervises and evaluates programs, plans, services, staffing and equipment needs of the department; assists in maintaining the City’s infrastructure. Directly oversees all aspects of the Public Works Department, including streets’ maintenance and repair, solid waste management, fleet services, snow and ice removal and grounds maintenance. Respond to public inquiries and complaints; evaluates issues and concerns, develops options for resolution and makes recommendations to resolve conflicts and promote the department, as appropriate. Supervise division superintendents and support staff directly, recruit, select and supervise divisional personnel; assigns, directs, and inspects the work of staff; Issues written and oral instructions. Develop staff schedules; recommend transfers, promotions, suspensions, terminations, and demotions to the City Manager. Attend City Council meetings and departmental meetings as needed. Prepare the annual departmental operating and capital budget requests and prepare composite reports from individual reports of subordinates. Prepare a wide variety of administrative reports on divisional activities as requested or as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in public administration, engineering, business administration or related field; considerable experience in a professional capacity in the public sector, including Public Works operational experience. Considerable experience in managing and supervising operational staff. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Requirements
- Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and an acceptable driving record according to City criteria.
- Must possess or obtain Debris Management Plan certification within 6 months of hire.
- Must complete required ICS and NIMS training within one year of hire.
Pay
$78,788 to $108,778 DOE
