About the Organization
The City of Bee Cave operates under a Council-Manager form of government, transitioning from a Type-A General Law municipality in 2006 and adopting a Home Rule Charter in 2013. The City Council, comprised of a Mayor and five Council Members elected to staggered two-year terms, sets policy and strategic direction. The City Manager, appointed by the Council, oversees day-to-day administration and implementation of Council priorities.

About the Role
The Director of Planning and Development is responsible for the leadership and management of planning, engineering, building inspections, code compliance, GIS, and business development functions. Reporting to the Assistant City Manager, the Director provides vision, strategic direction, and operational oversight to ensure the city’s growth aligns with its mission and community values.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Planning and Development Department, including planning, engineering, building inspections, code compliance, GIS, and business development.
- Develop and implement long-range plans, policies, and regulations to guide responsible growth and development.
- Oversee the review and approval of development applications, ensuring compliance with city codes, ordinances, and state regulations.
- Coordinate with other city departments, external agencies, and stakeholders to facilitate development projects and infrastructure improvements.
- Provide professional guidance and recommendations to the City Council, Planning and Zoning Commission, and other advisory boards.
- Manage departmental budgets, staff, and resources effectively to meet organizational goals.
- Foster positive relationships with developers, property owners, residents, and community groups to promote collaboration and transparency.
- Stay abreast of trends, best practices, and innovations in planning, development, and urban design.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Civil Engineering, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in planning, development, or a related field, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory or management role.
- Experience working in municipal government and familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations governing land use, zoning, and development.
- Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build consensus and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in GIS software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant planning and development tools.
