About the role

Blacksmith Agency runs PPC and SEO for clients across multifamily, B2B, and technical verticals. As Director of Performance Marketing you will lead that department. The PPC strategist and the SEO strategist report to you and are the specialists in their channels. This is a management seat, not a senior individual‑contributor role—you will not be building campaigns, and on technical SEO your strategist will know more than you do. You own channel strategy and budget allocation as accounts scale, while the strategists execute and you ensure the department delivers.

What you own

  • The PPC strategist and the SEO strategist: their quality bar, development, performance reviews, and the decision when someone is not meeting expectations.
  • Defining the standards for work quality—what a good audit looks like, pre‑delivery checks, and reporting expectations. You write these standards and hold the two specialists to them.
  • Client results across the whole function, including ensuring reporting is honest and accurate (e.g., auditing attribution and GA4 accuracy).
  • Escalations when an account is at risk: diagnose the issue, direct the strategist to fix it, and join the client call.
  • Channel strategy and budget allocation as accounts scale.
  • Communicating to sales what the agency can credibly deliver before a deal is closed.
  • Hiring plan for the department and conducting first‑round interviews for new team members within roughly a quarter.

What you need

  • 7+ years of experience across paid media and SEO, with direct responsibility for managing strategists or specialists, including their reviews, development, and performance‑management decisions.
  • Deep knowledge of Google Ads, GA4, Search Console, Meta, and Microsoft Ads—enough to evaluate work quality without being the primary executor.
  • One concrete account turnaround you can discuss: pre‑ and post‑metrics, the change implemented, and why it succeeded.
  • Comfortable being the client‑facing owner when an account underperforms; the escalation call comes to you, not the strategist.
  • Agency experience handling multiple accounts simultaneously.
  • Do not apply if you have never had direct reports, have never owned performance reviews, have only managed a single channel, have only in‑house brand experience, or are looking to continue building campaigns yourself.

Process

  • 30‑minute screen with a recruiter.
  • First‑round interview with the founder to whom this seat reports.
  • Final interview (no take‑home project or panel interview).

How to apply

  • Complete the four fields on the application link.
  • Take the short 6‑minute Predictive Index assessment.
  • Use the same email address throughout the process.
  • No cover letter required.
