Director of Operations (GM)

About the role

Our National Conversation (ONC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan media outlet largely run by student interns (mostly college, some high school, some grad school). We are seeking an Operations Director to work with our student interns for 10 hours per week. We are trying to reduce toxic partisanship in America. Our motto: Less hate, more debate.

Responsibilities

• Provide "adult supervision" to ensure student interns stay on track and produce results
• Check in via Slack approximately four times daily for 15 minutes at a time to monitor progress, ask questions, and push for follow-up
• Attend team meetings (almost daily at 3:30 p.m. PST, typically 40 minutes) as often as possible
• Serve as an "enforcer" type to hover over operations in several short bursts throughout the day
• Help interns move forward with confidence by providing authority and approval when plans make sense
• Manage turnover as interns come and go each semester
• Free up the Executive Director and Editor/CEO from day-to-day fire-fighting so they can focus on fundraising

Schedule

• 10 hours per week, Monday through Friday
• One hour of daily check-ins (four 15-minute sessions)
• One daily Zoom meeting (usually 40 minutes)
• Typical day: approximately 2 hours total

Qualifications

• Comfortable being the boss and overseeing all details
• Able to provide direction and approval to young, cautious interns who need feedback and permission
• Organized and responsive in Slack-based communication
• Able to attend meetings and check in consistently throughout the day
