Director of Nursing (DON)

About the role

VitalCore Health Strategies, an industry leader in Correctional Healthcare, is seeking a Director of Nursing (RN) to oversee nursing services at the City of Alexandria Jail in Alexandria, VA. This supervisory role coordinates nursing personnel, ensures patient needs are met, and partners with leadership to meet contractual and clinical performance targets.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate nursing staff activities in a 24-hour correctional healthcare setting.
• Verify patient needs are met and evaluate nursing care and unit performance.
• Plan and organize staff training; collaborate with Health Services Administrator and regional leadership.
• Implement work structures and processes to meet contract requirements and healthcare policies.
• Provide clinical supervision, mentoring, and developmental feedback to nursing staff.
• Develop and monitor performance improvement plans; conduct regular audits for compliance and quality improvement.
• Facilitate accreditation readiness and ensure adherence to NCCHC, ACA, and state-specific standards.
• Schedule nursing staff to ensure adequate coverage and appropriate skill levels on all shifts.
• Participate in regional DON calls, initiatives, and site-level QAPI committees.
• Ensure compliance with state licensure, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited nursing school; Bachelor’s or Master’s in nursing preferred.
• Active RN license in the State of Virginia; board-certified or board-eligible in medicine.
• Minimum 3 years of clinical healthcare experience; correctional healthcare experience preferred.
• Previous clinical operations management experience; direct management in correctional health setting desired.
• Knowledge of NCCHC, ACA, and state-specific accreditation standards and quality improvement programs.
• Specialty certification in correctional healthcare (e.g., CCHP, CCHP-RN) is a plus.
