Responsibilities

  • Organize, supervise and evaluate the Nursing Department.
  • Develop and convey the philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Department.
  • Interview and retain qualified and effective staff.
  • Assure all required nursing orientation and staff development programs are conducted and recorded.
  • Assure implementation of resident care policies.
  • Perform associate evaluations.
  • Develop and implement criteria and tools to evaluate the effectiveness of the Nursing Department.
  • Cooperate with recommendations made by community consultants.
  • Assess the overall health status of prospective and present residents to determine appropriate services and level of care.
  • Perform quality assurance rounds.
  • Provide consultation to licensed nurses regarding policies, procedures, and resident care and clinical monitors.
  • Participate in developing care plans.
  • Ensure timely resident care conferences are conducted.
  • Monitor timely physician and other health professional visits.
  • Assure completion of initial, annual, quarterly and change in status MDS’s.
  • Assure personnel are trained to identify and report safety hazards.
  • Assess environment for risk factors during rounds.
  • Assure departmental compliance with security procedures.
  • Monitor incident/accident reports and promptly communicate unusual occurrences to appropriate individuals.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements.
  • Monitor use of medical devices.
  • Maintain familiarity with current state and federal regulations which affect resident care and community operation.
  • Participate in periodic surveys by Division of Long Term Care, State Department of Health and complete required paperwork and plans in a timely manner.
  • Monitor resident medical record documentation for adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete and submit required forms and reports in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the preparation and administration of the annual budget based on staffing, equipment and supplies and operational expenses to assure quality and cost effective care.
  • Monitor usage of supplies and equipment.
  • Develop long-range plans for replacement of major equipment.
  • Promote maintenance of maximum resident census and retention of quality personnel.
  • Attend department director meetings as scheduled.
  • Communicate with department directors to problem solve and plan for improved care and services.
  • Monitor and coordinate health professional’s contract services.
  • Monitor provisions of specialized therapies.
  • Conduct nursing department management meetings to exchange information and address issues affecting resident care and promote job satisfaction.
  • Participate in various committees and conferences.
  • Admit advisory
  • Rehabilitation and Restorative committee
  • Management team
  • Resident care plan committee
  • Confer with Pharmacy consultant
  • Confer with Dietary consultant
  • At-risk committee, i.e. fall, skin, weight
  • QAPI committee
  • Complete required updates with insurance companies.
  • Display positive and professional image, acting as a spokesperson for the community.
  • Review and resolve grievances with the Administrator.
  • Establish linkage with the established community agencies.
  • Conduct community tours to interested persons and prospective residents as necessary.
  • Communicate and collaborate with educational institutions, as feasible, to enhance educational and other programs for the benefit of personnel and residents.
  • Maintain current knowledge of scope of practice for self and support staff.
  • Encourage innovative methods of delivery of long-term care.
  • Seek opportunities for personal and professional growth, related to clinical standards of practice, gerontology, interpersonal skills and infection control.
  • Adhere to the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Display courteous, a cooperative, helpful manner with residents, visitors and other associates.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN).
  • Current RN license in the state of employment.
  • Experience in long-term care setting preferred.
  • Experience in managing a nursing department preferred.
  • Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures preferred.
  • Experience in conducting quality assurance rounds preferred.
  • Experience in providing consultation to licensed nurses preferred.
  • Experience in developing and implementing criteria and tools to evaluate the effectiveness of the Nursing Department preferred.
  • Experience in cooperating with recommendations made by community consultants preferred.
