Director of Nursing

Part of the management team of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Practices within the American Nursing Association (ANA) Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate the coordination of care across the continuum and demonstrate safe practice within the domains of clinical judgment, decision-making, professional relationships, clinical leadership, and clinical scholarship.
• Provide oversight, mentoring, and training of RNs, LPNs, and Medical Assistants in clinical practices for the Department of OBGYN across multiple practice locations.
• Lead all clinical quality initiatives in the practice, working collaboratively with the Department Chair and Department Administrators to support providers in reaching these goals.
• Ensure clinical staff compliance with procedures and processes to achieve departmental goals.
• Serve as a resource for Divisional Practice/Office Managers in the department.
• Travel to all office locations and throughout all divisions to meet departmental demands.
• Clinical Leadership:
  • Support the development of others and create a practice climate of responsiveness and learning.
  • Lead and influence the reasoning of colleagues in the patient’s best interest through skillful comportment, authoritative clinical knowledge, and ethical conviction.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior by adhering to unit policies, practice guidelines, and the ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Fulfill the role of the nurse as a teacher.
  • Demonstrate ability to fulfill a role in regulatory compliance and readiness.
  • Achieve and maintain BLS certification as required by departmental standards.
  • Serve as a patient advocate, within the limits of the law.
• Clinical Staff Training and Development (25%):
  • Oversee clinical staff orientation, training, ongoing staff development, and clinical workflow implementations.
  • Support protocols for delivery of clinical care through training and workflow implementation.
  • Supervise all clinical practice support functions (RN, LPN, MA) to ensure safe and efficient delivery of quality healthcare across multiple practice locations.
  • Bear full responsibility for:
    • Properly and adequately teaching, directing, and supervising clinical staff.
    • Outcomes resulting from training and mentorship.
    • Setting the standard for providing safe patient care through organizational skills that maintain and coordinate safe delivery of quality care.
    • Performing systematic patient assessment with clinical teams and recording related health data.
    • Coaching staff to make informed judgments regarding specific nursing care mandated by particular situations.
• Support Department and EVMS-MG Quality Initiatives:
  • Monitor activities across divisions to ensure practices conform to EVMS Medical Group Quality Standards and other external quality indicators.
  • Stay abreast of requirements and financial incentives related to Quality Payment Program and AMA/NCQA/HEDIS Measures Initiatives.
  • Support EVMS-MG participation in Sentara Quality Initiatives (SQCN, Optima Medicare Advantage).
  • Support development and implementation of policies and procedures for Quality Initiatives at EVMS Medical Group.
  • Inform and educate providers, managers, and staff about departmental quality objectives and targets.
  • Present quality mission, goals, and data to the department or select groups.
  • Collaborate with the OBGYN Associate Chair for Quality & Clinical Affairs to support Division Chiefs/Medical Directors in quality improvement projects.
  • Stay informed about quality issues affecting EVMS Medical Group patient populations (e.g., Drug and Product Recalls, Pay for Performance, Chronic Disease Issues, CMS programs like MIPS/MACRA, Medicare Advantage Programs, SQCN, ACO).
• Clinical Staff Oversight and Workflow Implementation:
  • Maintain appropriate clinical staffing levels and plan for staffing needs.
  • Work clinically to understand divisional workflows and provide coverage support as needed.
  • Ensure smooth patient flow in all clinical areas.
  • Monitor clinical staff electronic health record documentation and quality charting techniques to ensure compliance with medical records standards.
  • Maintain a customer-focused practice environment with a monitoring process for feedback.
  • Notify Department leadership of required corrections and ongoing concerns.
  • Implement policies and procedures affecting practice operations.
  • Recommend resources needed to maintain optimum efficiency and productivity.
  • Consult with leadership on clinical problems and interpretation of departmental policies.
  • Directly supervise clinical nursing staff, including RN, LPN supervisors, LPNs, and MAs.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, and work assignments of clinical support staff.
  • Employ, evaluate, and terminate clinical staff personnel in coordination with Divisional Practice/Office Manager and EVMS Human Resources.
  • Conduct performance evaluations in coordination with the Divisional Practice/Office Manager.
  • Maintain OSHA, CLIA standards, and requirements.
  • Maintain clean, safe, and well-stocked nursing areas.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and business functions of the clinic.
  • Attend required in-service training/meetings.
  • Participate in EVMS Medical Group committees to develop plans and procedures for improvement of patient care and practice support operations.
  • Adhere to all EVMS, EVMS-MG, State, and Federal Policies & Procedures, as well as Regulatory and Compliance guidelines.
  • Demonstrate positive leadership and customer service attitude/behavior.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• BSN and Virginia Registered Nurse license are required.
• Five (5) years of nursing supervisory experience in a medical group, office, or hospital environment is required.
• Progressively more responsible positions in clinical practice within a large medical group practice is strongly preferred.
• Experience in OBGYN is preferred.
