About the role

You will develop annual nursing department goals and objectives in keeping with the overall Mission Statement of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. You will endorse the concept of holistic care and promote its practice in Nursing Services. You will formulate nursing policies and procedures; develop and evaluate nursing protocols and standards of practice. You will collaborate with the Medical Director regarding Standing Orders, nursing outreach to outside Providers, pharmacy practices, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and oversee method of regular resident acuity assessments to determine appropriate staffing ratios.
  • Responsible for hiring, evaluation, and discipline.
  • Develop and implement Nursing Services' budget.
  • Supervise completion of nursing payroll and analyze payroll data to determine budgetary implications.
  • Oversee all nursing personnel issues in a manner that promotes teamwork and focus on resident care.
  • Establish and oversee method of regular resident acuity assessments to determine appropriate staffing ratios.
  • Participate in educational programs to remain knowledgeable of current issues in nursing administration and the practice of geriatric nursing.
  • Supervise the development of nursing staff education programs.
  • Encourage participation by all nursing employees.
  • Serve as the nursing management team leader, focusing on delegation of responsibilities and enhancement of skill levels.
  • Apprise Dominican Life Center Administrator of health status of residents, including hospitalized residents.
  • Consult clinically with hospital staff and review medical records as requested by the Chapter Prioress and/or Administrator.
  • Promote safe and effective medication therapy; monitor staff compliance with established policies and procedures for medication distribution, control, and administration.
  • Coordinate the nursing management team, focusing on delegation of responsibilities and enhancement of skill levels.
  • Assist Administrator in developing and maintaining an interdisciplinary quality assurance performance improvement program.
  • Oversee admission and discharge of residents to and from nursing units in the Dominican Life Center.
  • Assure that Chapter Prioresses are appropriately informed of residents condition change and/or medical care including evaluation, treatment, hospitalization, or equipment that may be a major expense.
  • Collaborate with Administrator on evaluating clinical contracted services such as laboratory services, pharmacy services and diagnostic services.
  • Clinical consultation as requested by Congregational leadership.
  • Support Dominican Life Center Administration in maintaining professional rapport and open communication with other health care providers.
  • Support the processes whereby advance directives are formulated and ethical decisions are made regarding resident care; promote ethics that are consistent with residents' choices and the Adrian Dominican Sisters mission and values.
  • Review all nursing co-worker injury reports. Complete or oversee all follow-up with co-workers and works with Human Resources in coordinating a co-worker's medical treatment and return to work.
  • Collaborate with HR regarding the ability to offer accommodations to co-workers released with restrictions.
  • Ensure that all incidents involving residents or nursing co-workers are documented timely and accurately and share all findings with the Administrator.
  • In the absence of the DLC Administrator, responsible for the overall operations of the Dominican Life Center.
  • Demonstrate proper leadership and reinforces a positive attitude towards safety in the workplace by providing a good example of safe behavior, by intervening to correct inappropriate behavior and conduct training, and by enforcing all health and safety policies in a proactive manner.
  • Perform other duties as may be requested by the Administrator.

Requirements

  • Education: Registered Nurse - graduate of an accredited nursing program. Current license to practice nursing in the State of Michigan. BSN or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years nursing experience with a minimum of 3 years' experience in a progressive management/leadership role in a long-term care facility. Prior experience as a Director of Nursing strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: Above average interpersonal skills. Value system compatible with Adrian Dominican Sisters. Creative approach to problem-solving and long-range planning. Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team. Ability to work with a wide range of personalities and communicate effectively with diplomacy and tact. Knowledge and experience in finance, operations management, strategic planning, and community relations. Ability to build effective working relationships with Physicians and positive networking relationships with local peers.
  • Physical: Must be able to work at least eight hours per day. Job requires bending/stooping occasionally; and lifting up to 30 pounds frequently. Must be sighted and capable of hearing.
