Director of Music

About the role

The Director of Music at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in San Antonio, TX, is responsible for overseeing the liturgical music ministry of the parish. This includes recruiting, training, and developing music ministers and cantors, leading the parish choir and children's choirs, preparing and selecting music for Masses and special liturgical events, and coordinating with various church departments.

Responsibilities

• Recruit, train, and develop talent from within the Parish community.
• Schedule all music ministers and cantors for liturgies.
• Re-establish, build, and direct the parish choir and seasonal children’s choir.
• Select and prepare music for Masses and special liturgical events.
• Attend required meetings with pastoral staff, musicians, cantors, and Liturgy Committee.
• Attend all weekend Masses, holy day Masses, and other liturgical events.
• Provide organ and piano accompaniment for some liturgies.
• Coordinate liturgical services with the OCIA team.
• Coordinate with the Director of Religious Education for Confirmations, First Communions, and special liturgies.
• Plan music for weddings and funerals, ensuring appropriateness.
• Assist families in selecting musicians/cantors for their services.
• Model Gospel values and adhere to church policies.
• Support and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

Qualifications

• Musically proficient in both Spanish and English.
• A degree in Music, Liturgical Music, or a related field, or equivalent experience in church music direction.
• Strong leadership and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in playing the piano or organ.
• Comprehensive understanding of liturgical music.
• Practicing Catholic with a thorough understanding of Catholic liturgy and traditions.
• Flexible working hours, including nights and weekends.
• Ability to read and interpret standard musical notation.
• Knowledge of Catholic liturgy and sacred music.
• Effective communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Working knowledge of sound systems and basic technology.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and music-related software.

Skills/Knowledge

• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
• Knowledge of liturgy preferred.
• Experience selecting appropriate liturgical music.
• Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and work with volunteers.
• Vocal and organ/piano proficiency within the Roman Catholic Liturgy.
• Choral conducting proficiency.

Language Skills

• Ability to read, analyze, and write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Strong communication skills; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
• Good verbal and written communication skills in English.

Reasoning Ability

• Ability to solve practical problems.
• Ability to interpret instructions furnished in writing or orally.
• Excellent time management skills.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• Valid Driver’s License.
• Pass archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening.

Physical Demands

• Sit for long periods of time.
• Use hands in repetitive motion tasks.
• Answer telephone calls.
• Stand, stoop, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment
