Director of Marketing and Communications

About the role
The Director of Marketing and Communications will lead the firm’s communications and marketing efforts, based in our New York City, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Raleigh, Dallas, Los Angeles, or San Francisco Bay Area offices. This role will shape how HR&A communicates its work, expertise, and impact to external audiences while also strengthening internal communications across the firm. The Director will oversee external communications, internal communications, and marketing initiatives that support business development and brand visibility.
- Develop and implement strategies that elevate HR&A’s brand, thought leadership, and visibility in conversations about the firm’s business priorities.
- Lead proactive and reactive media engagement with support from the firm’s public relations agency and manage relationships with other external vendors and creative agencies.
- Oversee the firm’s editorial calendar and development of content about the firm and its impact; ensure consistent messaging, design, and brand alignment across all external communications channels, including the firm’s website and newsletter/email marketing program.
- Collaborate with teams to creatively communicate the impact of HR&A’s work.
- Support digital product launches with coordinated communications and content strategies.
- Design and manage internal communications that keep staff informed, aligned, and connected to the firm’s priorities and impact.
- Support corporate communications, including firmwide updates, key announcements, and strategic initiatives.
- Help translate firm strategy and initiatives into clear internal messaging for staff at all levels.
- Develop and manage marketing materials and special initiatives that strengthen HR&A’s brand presence and support business development.
- Design and improve the firm’s proposal systems and processes.
- Develop and manage proposal tools, templates, and knowledge resources that help teams prepare stronger proposals more efficiently.
- Oversee workflows and coordination for priority pursuits, ensuring high-quality messaging, design, and delivery.
- Track and evaluate proposal performance to improve effectiveness over time.
- Manage a formal internal intake system for marketing and communications requests from across the firm.
Requirements
- 10–15 years of relevant experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, ideally within a professional services, consulting, or mission-driven organization.
- Experience managing and developing staff, including setting priorities, providing feedback, and supporting professional growth.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to translate complex ideas into clear and engaging content.
- Strong strategic thinking and the ability to develop communications approaches that support organizational goals.
- Experience managing multiple communications channels including digital platforms, media relations, and internal communications.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
- Experience designing and managing proposal systems and processes.
- Comfort and enthusiasm for using emerging tools, including AI-enabled platforms, to improve workflows, content development, and marketing effectiveness.
- Experience overseeing digital platforms, including content management systems, email marketing tools (e.g., Mailchimp), and managing technical vendor relationships for web development.
- Experience managing freelance content creators and editorial talent, including journalists and creative professionals.
Schedule
HR&A fosters a collaborative and flexible work environment through our hybrid work policy. Employees work from the office at least three days a week.
Pay
The base salary range for this position is $131,600–$153,779, plus the opportunity for a discretionary year-end bonus. Where an offer falls inside this pay range is dependent on experience.
