Director of Human Resources
The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan serves as a common solicitor, storehouse and distributor of food on behalf of its Partner Agencies, which are non-profit, charitable organizations serving those in need. The organization provides over 40 million pounds of food annually to more than 700 partner agencies, including soup kitchens, shelters, and food pantries, helping to feed over 300,000 food-insecure individuals across 22 counties in eastern Michigan.
About the role
The Director of Human Resources will direct the organization’s Human Resources Management function, ensuring consistent implementation through strategic and influential organizational behavior, legal and equitable personnel actions. This role is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and evaluation of the Human Resources function.
Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains a human resources system that meets personnel and organizational needs.
- Plans, directs, and administers human resource programs.
- Annually reviews and makes recommendations to Executive Management for improvement of policies, procedures, and practices on personnel matters.
- Writes and revises job classification specifications.
- Develops training programs and teaches courses.
- Develops, reviews, and revises policies and procedures.
- Provides advice and counsel to department heads, managers, and staff.
- Represents the department with the Board, related agencies, and the public.
- Manages HR-related vendor relationships and contracts.
- Ensures that human resource programs support the long-term goals of the Board for the organization.
- Maintains knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures compliance.
- Responsible for compliance with Federal and State legislation pertaining to all human resources matters.
- Communicates changes in policies and procedures and ensures proper compliance is followed.
- Assists executive management in the annual review, preparation, and administration of wage and salary programs.
- Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, or as directed by the President, on human resource matters.
- Works directly with department managers to assist them in carrying out their responsibilities on employment and personnel matters.
- Recommends, evaluates, and participates in employee and management development.
- Supervises the staff of the Human Resources Department.
- Participates on committees and special projects and seeks additional responsibilities.
- Shows passion and interest in helping the surrounding community and gets involved with community organizations.
- Works effectively with stakeholders from diverse populations, revealing sensitivity, understanding, and acceptance of others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred.
- HR Certification preferred (e.g., SHRM).
- Minimum five to seven years of related experience in a non-profit, mission-driven environment.
- Minimum two to three years leading and developing HR team members.
- Experience balancing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven success communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of Human Resources recruitment approaches for all levels of recruitment and staffing.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ERISA, ADA, FLSA, EEO/Affirmative Action, and Department of Labor laws, requirements, statutes, and acts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of compensation and benefits issues and strategies.
- Highly experienced in dealing with sensitive and confidential personnel matters.
- Demonstrated success in leading and developing growing HR team members.
- Strong knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of personnel administration and management.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with management staff, employees, vendors, and the general public.
- Excellent ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in verbal and written form.
- Strong stand-up presentation skills.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
