About the role
The Director of Health and Recreation is responsible for the overall supervision of the fitness center as it relates to staff, programs, budgeting, and safety.
Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Health and Fitness Center.
- Ensure monthly revenue targets are met by creating action plans to reach monthly goals.
- Recruit, hire, and train staff of all levels.
- Develop personal trainers, grow revenue, and assist members in reaching fitness goals.
- Oversee and support Aquatics director in developing lifeguards and swim instructors to grow revenue and assist members in reaching fitness goals.
- Collaborate with staff members to ensure cleanliness and tidiness of the facility, and maintenance of equipment and pool.
- Manage expenses and purchase new equipment.
- Oversee and assist supervisors with training all staff members.
- Provide effective operational guidance to the fitness & sports team to successfully execute fitness and sports programs.
- Work collaboratively across the agency to create opportunities to grow member count through high-quality interactions and programs designed to drive overall member engagement.
- Stay up to date on trends to create a robust offering of programs and activities that will engage and keep families and individuals connected to the Y.
- Act as building supervisor during select times and provide breaks for colleagues as necessary.
- Replace manager on duty and personal trainers in their absence.
- Work cooperatively with facility maintenance department and outside services regarding any necessary repairs within the department.
- Attend and participate in management meetings.
- Act as member of the Emergency Response Teams in the event of medical emergencies.
Requirements
- Minimum of bachelor's degree in physical education, Recreation, Health and Wellness, or a related field (preferred).
- First Aid / CPR / AED Certified.
- Certified Pool Operator Certificate (not required).
- Commitment to obtain Personal Trainer Certification within 18 months of employment.
- Able to work a flexible schedule: evenings and weekends required.
Pay
$75,000 - $85,000 per year
Schedule
Full-Time Position (40+ hours). Must be available to work a minimum of one evening and weekend day.

The Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center was founded in 1956 to serve Nassau and Western Suffolk counties. More than 12,000 members and patrons benefit from the human services provided. For over 50 years, the organization has been teaching the young, caring for the aged, counseling the bereaved, and offering social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs to individuals and families of all ages, faiths, and backgrounds. The Mid-Island Y JCC is a UJA-Federation agency and is affiliated with United Way and the JCC Association of North America.
