Director of Family Relations, Alpha - $200,000/year USD
On-site: Palo Alto, Piedmont, San Francisco, La Jolla (San Diego), or Los Angeles (South Bay), CA
About the role
The families you serve do not require additional services. They require someone they trust implicitly. This position operates at the heart of that trust. You will become the individual families turn to when something feels uncertain, when they seek perspective, or when they wish to share what matters most. Not as a function of your title—but because you have earned their confidence. Your influence will define their experience of their child's education at one of five California locations: Palo Alto, Piedmont, downtown San Francisco, La Jolla, or South Bay (Los Angeles).
Alpha is constructing a fundamentally different school. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily through AI-powered platforms, then dedicate the remainder of their time to public speaking, critical thinking, and real-world execution. No lectures. No busywork. Top 1% outcomes nationally. Our families are sophisticated, well-counseled, and frequently skeptical. They expect sharp reasoning, not rehearsed talking points. You will steward that dialogue over time. Not only during enrollment, but across years. You will speak with fluency about AI—how it functions, where it falls short, and why it is significant—particularly with families who build companies, invest in them, or demand precision in every choice. If you are unable to sustain that caliber of conversation, this role will prove demanding. If you can, it becomes among the most intellectually stimulating positions in education.
This is not customer success. This is sustained trust-building with ultra-high-net-worth families who require discretion, judgment, and reliability. If that setting feels natural—and you use AI daily to think, write, and operate more efficiently—you will see the opportunity at once.
Responsibilities
- Own the complete relationship with each family on campus, cultivating trust that deepens over time
- Identify concerns proactively and address them with discretion, urgency, and sound reasoning
- Sustain high visibility at critical moments: morning drop-off, afternoon pick-up, and curated parent gatherings
- Facilitate ongoing, substantive conversations about Alpha's AI-driven approach with highly analytical, tech-forward families
- Create and refine community experiences that foster belonging, advocacy, and referral activity
What You Won’t Be Doing
- Overseeing admissions pipelines or enrollment metrics—your work begins once families enroll
- Operating from behind a desk or relying solely on email—this is a high-visibility role
- Using scripts or avoiding difficult questions about AI or education
- Depending on established processes—you will develop systems where none currently exist
- Viewing families as accounts—this role values judgment, not task execution

- Active, daily user of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) with the ability to clearly explain AI capabilities, risks, and limitations
- Strong presence and communication style that earns credibility with highly educated, high-expectation families
- Familiarity with private or independent school ecosystems, either professionally or personally
- Availability for early mornings, late afternoons, and select evening or weekend events
Nice-to-have Requirements
- Existing relationships within local private school or UHNW communities
- Experience working with founders, investors, or tech executives
- Track record of building communities or experiences that drive organic referrals
