About the role
A key member of the hotel Leadership Committee reporting to the General Manager, the Director of Events leads all Event Sales and Event Planning operations, overseeing a team of Event Managers and support staff. This role owns the complete event experience—from contract turnover through execution and post-event follow-up—ensuring exceptional client service while driving event revenue and achieving property goals.
The Director of Events manages a diverse portfolio of events, including corporate programs, weddings, buyouts, and social gatherings, while building strong client relationships, developing team talent, and identifying opportunities to enhance the guest experience and maximize revenue.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for short- and long-term planning and the management of Event Sales and Event Planning
- Develop and recommend the budget, marketing plans, and objectives and manage within those approved plans
- Maintain or exceed budgeted sales and profits in all event areas
- Develop and implement effective marketing plans for generating catering revenues
- Evaluate each piece of event business to ensure it can be properly serviced
- Monitor sales performance of Event Sales Managers
- Create innovative menus based on the skills of the kitchen and work closely with the Chef on pricing specialty menus
- Train, supervise, and work with event staff to solicit, book, plan, merchandise, and execute banquet and event functions
- Collaborate with the Banquet Manager and their team to ensure quality levels are met daily and enhance overall banquet set-ups
- Lead the event team to build long-term, value-based customer relationships that enable achievement of hotel event sales objectives
- Administer all phases of the event department, including sales, planning, marketing, servicing, and administrative procedures
- Coach and counsel employees to reflect Hyatt service standards and procedures
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with people of diverse cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds
- 6+ years of progressive hotel Event Sales and Planning experience (typically with Hyatt)
- Service-oriented style with professional presentation skills
- At least 3 years of experience in a senior role in an Event Sales/Planning environment
- Hotel/Hospitality degree an asset
- High energy, entrepreneurial spirit, and motivational leadership skills
- Effective communicator with a focus on exceptional customer service and improving the bottom line
- Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills in English
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, with advanced technological skills and the ability to adapt to new systems
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and administrative skills
- Maintain communications with Corporate Staff
