About the role
The Director of Environmental Services leads, directs, and manages the operations and activities of the Environmental Services Department within assigned hospital and hospital department/campus locations. The Director ensures consistent, high-quality service in a sanitary environment while meeting State, Local, Federal, and Joint Commission regulations, established policies and procedures, and department standards of performance.
Responsibilities
- Evaluates existing systems and processes, initiates change and improvements, and makes suggestions to upper management.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ensures compliance with all current policies, procedures, and regulatory standards (TJC, OSHA, EEOC, and others) within all Environmental Services areas.
- Consistently demonstrates the organization’s commitment to sound ethical business practices in accordance with the Corporate Integrity and Compliance Program, annual work plan, and established policies and procedures.
- Directs the effective operation of all Environmental Services activities to provide an aseptic and aesthetically pleasing environment by coordinating and supervising all functions of the department.
- Leads, directs, and manages the daily operations of the Environmental Services Department, encompassing all patient and non-patient areas of assigned square footage.
- Prepares or directs the preparation of department records, recurring and special reports, and analyses (e.g., bed management turnaround times) as required or requested.
- Assumes accountability for promoting consistent, positive patient interactions to meet or exceed HCAHPS goals. Maintains a patient-first philosophy and engages in service recovery when necessary.
- Supports the development and implementation of strategies to elevate the patient experience.
- Acts as a liaison with patients, their representatives, physicians, and employees to provide high-quality service.
- Ensures full and timely compliance with staff development, including training, education, competency assessment, and performance reviews.
- Provides for a well-trained and competent staff through supervision and coordination of all departmental activities.
- Directs the Environmental Services supervisory staff to achieve employee engagement goals and objectives.
- Leads others to accomplish organizational goals and objectives; provides coaching and mentoring to increase capabilities and drive engagement.
- Ensures staff performance and accomplishment of departmental responsibilities in accordance with corporate, hospital, department, and safety policies.
- Introduces new and innovative services and systems through up-to-date information about high-quality products, safety equipment, and time-saving methods.
- Directs the purchase of chemical supplies, equipment, linen, and other supplies to meet the needs of the assigned hospital and department campus.
- Manages department productivity to meet assigned goals and objectives, maximizing operational efficiency and cost minimization.
- Manages costs to achieve Net Spend per APD goals and objectives.
- Produces and manages the department budget, including accurate and timely GL coding.
- Manages and maximizes compliance with HealthTrust contracted vendors.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Practices and adheres to the "Code of Conduct" and "Mission and Value Statement."
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED (Required).
- Minimum of five years’ experience in managing environmental services (Required).
- Knowledge of hospital and healthcare operations (Preferred).
- Knowledge of hospital and healthcare financial metrics (Preferred).
- Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional (CHESP) (Preferred).
