About the role
The Director of Engineering will lead and unify engineering across APX's multi-site manufacturing platform. This role is responsible for building systems, strengthening execution, and developing a high-performing team of mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineers. This leader will move APX from people-dependent execution to process-driven performance, ensuring engineering supports scalable growth, operational discipline, and customer success.
Key Responsibilities
- Enterprise Engineering Leadership - Lead and develop a multi-disciplinary engineering team (mechanical, electrical, manufacturing) - Establish clear roles, accountability, and performance expectations across sites - Build bench strength through coaching, mentoring, and talent development - Foster a “one team” engineering culture across all business units
- Standardization & Process Discipline - Develop and implement standardized engineering processes across all facilities: Quoting & feasibility review Design & drawing standards Change management & revision control Release to production workflows - Drive consistency in ERP/MRP engineering integration - Eliminate variability and reduce reliance on tribal knowledge
- Operational Alignment - Partner closely with Operations, Sales, and Production teams - Ensure engineering is aligned to: Production schedules Material readiness Customer specifications Design for manufacturability - Support plant stabilization efforts (especially in high-variability environments) - Improve first-pass yield, lead times, and on-time delivery
- Commercial & Customer Support - Support pre-sale engineering validation and scope clarity - Reduce risk from: Scope gaps Underestimated engineering hours Revision-driven margin erosion - Act as a technical resource for key customers and complex projects
- Continuous Improvement & Scalability - Lead initiatives to improve: Engineering throughput Cycle times Cost accuracy Design automation - Implement metrics and KPIs for engineering performance - Support APX's transition to a scalable $100M+ platform
Qualifications
- Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related)
- 7–10+ years of engineering experience in manufacturing
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams
- Experience in multi-site or complex manufacturing environments
- Strong understanding of fabrication, machining, or industrial systems
- PREFERRED:
- Experience in metal fabrication, OEM, or industrial manufacturing
- Exposure to ERP/MRP systems (engineering integration strongly preferred)
- Lean / Six Sigma mindset (formal certification a plus)
- Experience scaling engineering within a growing organization
