Reporting to the Executive Director of Development (EDOD) for the Rutgers School of Medicine, this role focuses on raising significant philanthropic funds to support students, faculty, research, programs, and capital projects. The Director of Development will collaborate with the EDOD, the Rutgers School of Medicine Dean, faculty, and Rutgers Foundation colleagues while working with a high degree of autonomy.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engagement and solicitation strategies for every assigned donor and prospect in the current portfolio.
- Meet with current and prospective donors with the capacity to make philanthropic gifts of $100,000+; hold 75-100 unique and substantive meetings with prospects/donors annually and raise a minimum of $1M in new gifts and commitments.
- Increase engagement and identify additional capacity from existing donors while discovering, identifying, and soliciting new donors.
- Strategically utilize leadership and faculty to advance donor relationships toward successful solicitations and new philanthropic gifts.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and/or 6+ years of professional experience in fundraising, alumni relations, non-profit organizations, event planning, higher education, or related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and lead a team (and/or staff volunteers) to maximize each member’s potential.
- Experience leading a comprehensive unit or central development department/program.
- Ability to manage an implementation team and projects with moderate supervision, set goals, manage budgets, and meet deadlines.
- Experience managing a personal major gift donor/prospect portfolio with a focus on securing gifts at or above the $100,000 level and a personal fundraising goal of $1M.
- Ability to partner with peer directors and department leads across the organization.
- Strong relationship management skills with supervisors and university partners.
- Ability to devise and execute increasingly complex projects and adapt to changing situations.
- Ability to set priorities, determine strategy for a unit (including staffing and budgets), and develop written proposals and collateral materials for securing philanthropic investments.
Working Conditions
- Requires clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines with minimal physical effort.
- Evenings, weekends, or odd hours may be required to meet resource-raising commitments.
- Some early mornings and late evenings to accommodate meetings, travel, events, and external constituents’ schedules.
Schedule
This is an office-centric hybrid position. Colleagues are expected to work in the office between one and five days a week, depending on role and function.
Pay
Annual salary of $121,000 USD.
