About the Role

The Director provides counseling services to students and is responsible for developing, coordinating, and administering the policy and educational/prevention programming that targets mental health and substance abuse issues. The Director manages the programming, promotion, and implementation of student mental and physical health activities as well as provides oversight of student health management. This position closely collaborates with the Director of Student Engagement and Director of Recreation and Wellness and serves as liaison with the Sentara Student Health Clinic.

Responsibilities

Administrative Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for administration of the Office of Counseling and Student Health including securing counseling interns, supervision and caseload management of staff and interns, and oversight of scheduling
  • Manages budget
  • Develops policies, procedures, and protocols for the office
  • Represents the office within the campus and community
  • Collaborates with other departments in the development and administration of University policies and procedures that relate to mental health issues, Title II, Title IX, and/or alcohol and substance abuse
  • Participates in the CARE Team that monitors and responds to students of concern and offers expertise on risk assessment
  • Responsible for varied consulting and administrative tasks assigned by the Senior Vice President that assist with addressing student behavioral issues
  • Assesses behavioral concerns and makes recommendations to the Senior Vice President
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Clinical

  • Provides individual, group, and couples counseling to students
  • Provides emergency on-call assessments for students exhibiting signs of mental distress, coordinates with Residence Life and Campus Life when a student requires a mental health leave of absence, and coordinates the student’s return to campus
  • Consults, within clinical expertise, when requested by faculty and staff of the University
  • Supervises all clinical staff, including the full-time therapist, and anyone in the counselor position, typically four to six graduate interns
  • Provides mental health expertise in sexual assault cases when requested or participated in Sexual Misconduct Board proceedings

Student Engagement and Prevention

  • Responsible for the development, coordination, and execution of prevention programming that targets mental health issues and/or alcohol and substance abuse
  • Coordinates a range of health education and wellness services for students such as flu shots, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing, etc.
  • Develops and maintains student health social media presence to publicize wellness information, initiatives, and events to students

Student Health Management

  • Verifies and manages student health and immunization records in correspondence with Commonwealth regulations
  • Provides after-hours, on-call consultation to Residence Life staff regarding student health concerns
  • Collaborates with the Emergency Response Team
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for the Sentara Student Health Clinic on campus

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree is required in psychology, counseling, clinical social work, or related discipline
  • Licensure within the Commonwealth of Virginia, in their particular discipline, is required
  • Licensed Virginia driver and insurable under the University’s policy
  • Previous clinical and administrative experience is preferred. Minimum experience would be three to five years of progressive clinical experience at the post-master's level
  • A concentration in the area of substance abuse, substance abuse counseling, and/or substance abuse prevention is also preferred but not required
