Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Campus Security is an armed position responsible for leadership and strategic vision for the Public Safety operation. This position is responsible for all aspects of securing the institution’s facilities, assets, and personnel. In this role, the Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the public safety programs and procedures for WesternU. This position also oversees the contract security personnel. This position supervises the Campus Security Clerk, Campus Security Officer(s), Public Safety Officer(s), the Supervisor of Campus Security (Oregon) and the Manager of Campus Security.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act.
- Knowledge of Federal and State of CA legislation.
- Knowledge of public safety operations and requirements, including powers of arrest, use of force and free speech.
- Knowledge of security technology (surveillance cameras, access control systems, and other systems).
- Proficiency in computer skills necessary to set up document formats in Word, Excel and any other software programs required by the position.
- Effective communication (verbal and written).
- Collaborative working with students, faculty and staff.
- Ability to conduct formal investigations of, gathering facts and evidence in a manner required to ensure proper documentation for civil or criminal prosecution.
- Supervision of direct reports.
- Demonstrate a commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism.
Education, Experience, Certifications/Licenses And Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in public safety or a closely related field, or any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in public safety.
- Must be a current or retired sworn Peace Officer with a minimum 10 (ten) years of experience, including at least 5 (five) years as a supervisor.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a current and valid Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Firearms Permit/Exposed Firearms Permit (including Guard Card) and a legal firearm, as defined by the State of California.
- Must hold a valid California Concealed Weapons Permit if the incumbent plans to carry a concealed weapon.
- Valid California drivers’ license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire).
- Must pass the CORI criminal background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- FEMA (Incident Command Course Modules such as 100HE, 200, 700, 800), POST (Basic through Supervisory, Management/Executive), and other security/safety related certifications strongly desired.
- Experience in a campus security or campus law enforcement agency.
- Preferred Command Level law enforcement experience, at the rank of lieutenant or above.
