About the Role
The Director of Athletic Operations oversees all aspects of developmental youth and adult recreational sports, leagues, clinics, and tournaments under the direction of the Vice President of Family and Youth Development.
Responsibilities
- Directly supervise the Manager of Basketball and League Operations and the Assistant Director of Programs.
- Manage athletics operations, ensuring program quality, family engagement, staff recruitment, and a safe environment for all participants.
- Oversee, schedule, and evaluate the Manager of Basketball and League Operations and the Assistant Director of Programs.
- Create new court and field-based sports classes and league opportunities for youth and adults with support from the Manager of Basketball and League Operations.
- Support the Assistant Director of Programs in developing new offerings within the Bouncing Bears Kid Zone and other movement-based programs (e.g., dance, parkour).
- Develop and maintain the departmental budget.
- Recruit, train, schedule, terminate, and evaluate volunteers, year-round part-time staff, seasonal part-time staff (including basketball officials), and department contractors.
- Develop schedules for programs and member gym usage across various programs and special events.
- Partner with the Y Special Needs Department for sports and movement-based programs.
- Organize summer sports programs and camps, and support sports programming within Camp Mini and Camp Y-Ki as requested by Camp Directors.
- Oversee and develop sports and movement-based private lessons (e.g., basketball, volleyball, pickleball, gymnastics, parkour).
- Manage the sports and movement-based birthday party business, ensuring high-quality experiences from booking to execution.
- Communicate effectively with peers, staff, participants, and parents.
- Collaborate with community organizations and spearhead special events, including Family Field Day and other YMCA-hosted Community and Family Events.
- Lead or assist in sports and movement-based classes as needed.
- Communicate with vendors and support the agreement process for sports programs.
- Maintain clean facility areas with support from facilities and cleaning teams.
- Monitor facility and programming for risk management.
- Maintain positive public relationships with community sports agencies, youth, and parents.
- Maintain certifications in Red Cross safety, first aid (including AED), and adult/child CPR.
- Attend professional staff meetings to stay informed of YMCA activities.
- Perform other duties as designated by the supervisor.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Management, or a related field (preferred).
- 5+ years of experience in sports management.
- Ability to present professionally and communicate effectively with peers, staff, and members.
- CPR/AED/First Aid certification (required within the first 3 months of employment).
- Adherence to policies related to boundaries with consumers/youth, abuse risk management training, and mandated reporting requirements.
Schedule
Typical workweek is Monday–Friday, with hours varying based on seasonal demands (e.g., league schedules, Y-Ball season). May require swapping one weekday for a Saturday during Y-Ball season (as approved by the Vice President of Family & Youth Development).
