About the role

The Nurse Director is responsible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the operations and function of their assigned nursing unit(s). This role is accountable for managing clinical nursing practice, patient care delivery, human and fiscal resources, personnel development, regulatory compliance, strategic planning, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. The Director serves as a patient advocate to ensure all patient needs—physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional—are met.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned units.
• Manage operations in accordance with hospital policies, nursing practice standards, and governmental regulations to ensure high-quality patient care.
• Prioritize patient- and family-focused care, striving to meet customer expectations for quality and satisfaction.
• Provide administrative and financial accountability for planning, directing, staffing, coordinating, and controlling functions and activities, delegating authority as needed.
• Develop and align goals with the organization’s strategic plans while championing value-added ideas.
• Manage financial performance, including revenue targets and budget control, while preparing and monitoring the departmental budget.
• Ensure efficient daily staffing and maintain compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, TJC, EEOC, CDC, ACHA).
• Oversee unit activities to ensure safe, efficient, and effective operations for patients, families, and customers.
• Manage personnel actions, including hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
• Adapt to the evolving healthcare environment, supporting staff through change.
• Maintain high service standards for patients, families, visitors, physicians, and other hospital departments.
• Investigate and respond to complaints from patients, visitors, and physicians.
• Utilize performance management expertise to achieve department goals and hold staff accountable for policies and procedures.
• Develop and implement policies to ensure standards of care and service are clearly understood and followed.
• Promote a professional practice model that encourages staff participation in developing clinical standards using current trends and data.
• Communicate the mission of the Nursing Department and the organization consistently.
• Serve as the collective voice for unit staff in communications with administration and as a staff and patient advocate for optimal care.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (required).
• Master’s Degree (preferred).
• Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience (preferred).
• Minimum of 3-5 years of RN experience (required).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association (required).
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
• Additional certifications/qualifications may be required based on the specific unit or specialty.
• Analytical, motivational, and strategic planning skills.
• Intermediate computer knowledge: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
