About the Role

A growing MSP is hiring a Director of Network Engineering & Managed Services to help lead the continued evolution of its Network Engineering & Managed Services organization while remaining deeply involved in the technical work that drives exceptional customer outcomes. This is not a traditional management role. We're looking for a highly technical networking leader who enjoys rolling up their sleeves, solving difficult customer problems, mentoring engineers, and helping modernize a world-class managed services organization. You'll partner closely with executive leadership while remaining actively engaged in architecture, customer escalations, technical strategy, engineering standards, automation, and the continuous evolution of our managed services platform.

Who We're Looking For

This role is built for someone who started their career as a highly technical Network Engineer and naturally evolved into a player/coach leadership position. We're looking for leaders who still enjoy rolling up their sleeves to solve complex networking challenges, mentor engineers, and serve as the technical escalation point during critical customer situations. We're not looking for someone who simply manages Network Engineers—we're looking for someone Network Engineers naturally turn to when the toughest technical problems arise.

The ideal candidate has deep experience designing, implementing, troubleshooting, and supporting complex enterprise networks within an MSP, Managed Services Provider, VAR, or Systems Integrator environment. If your technical foundation is primarily in servers, systems infrastructure, cloud administration, or general IT operations rather than enterprise networking, this probably isn't the right opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior technical escalation point for complex networking and managed services issues.
  • Lead technical architecture discussions across enterprise customer environments.
  • Partner with executive leadership to modernize and continuously improve the Network Engineering & Managed Services organization.
  • Provide technical leadership during major customer bridge calls and critical service incidents.
  • Mentor Network Engineers while establishing engineering best practices across the organization.
  • Evaluate emerging networking technologies and help shape future managed service offerings.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Pre-Sales, Professional Services, and Engineering teams on complex customer opportunities.
  • Help define technical standards, automation strategies, operational processes, and the long-term technical direction of the managed services organization.

What Success Looks Like

  • You enjoy solving the hardest networking problems.
  • Engineers naturally come to you for guidance and complex troubleshooting.
  • You're comfortable leading major customer bridge calls during critical incidents.
  • You still enjoy designing, building, and troubleshooting enterprise networks—not simply managing people.
  • You continuously learn new technologies and enjoy improving automation, operational efficiency, and customer outcomes.
  • You naturally balance leadership responsibilities with hands-on technical execution.
  • You lead by example and earn credibility through your technical expertise.

Qualifications

You're likely a strong fit if:

  • You built your career as a Network Engineer before moving into leadership.
  • You've spent much of your career within an MSP, Managed Services Provider, VAR, or Systems Integrator environment.
  • You've supported multiple enterprise customers with complex networking environments.
  • You still enjoy jumping into technical challenges rather than simply delegating them.
  • You're comfortable serving as the highest technical escalation point for your team.
  • You have experience mentoring engineers while remaining technically engaged.
  • You naturally think about improving architecture, automation, operational maturity, and customer outcomes.
  • You enjoy building engineering teams and raising the technical bar around you.
  • You believe the best technical leaders lead by example.

Skills

Experience with several of the following is sought:

  • Enterprise Networking: Enterprise Routing & Switching, Cisco Catalyst & Nexus, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, SD-WAN, Wireless Networking, QoS, Multicast
  • Data Center & Infrastructure: Cisco ACI, VXLAN, VMware, Hyperconverged Infrastructure, Network Monitoring & Observability, High Availability Architectures
  • Network Security: Palo Alto, Cisco Security, Fortinet, VPN Technologies, Network Segmentation, Zero Trust, Identity & Access Management
  • Automation & Modern Operations: Python, Ansible, Infrastructure Automation, API Integrations, AI-Assisted Network Operations, Operational Automation

About the Company

We're looking for leaders who never lost their passion for technology. Our strongest technical leaders are naturally curious, broad technical problem-solvers who enjoy learning new technologies, mentoring engineers, and tackling the networking challenges that others can't solve. You'll spend your time designing solutions, solving complex customer problems, participating in architecture discussions, mentoring engineers, modernizing operational processes, and helping shape the future of a growing managed services organization.

This is an opportunity to join a growing MSP that is investing heavily in the future of its Network Engineering & Managed Services organization. You'll work alongside a highly technical leadership team that values engineering excellence, continuous improvement, innovation, and customer success. You'll have the opportunity to influence the technical direction of the organization while remaining engaged in architecture, engineering, customer escalations, and the complex technical challenges that make this role rewarding.
