Director Model Risk Management
About the Role
The Director of Athene Model Risk supports the oversight of model risk across Athene, reporting to the VP Operational Risk & Change Management. In this role, they will contribute to the model risk management working group and support reporting to the Operational Risk Committee, Management Risk Committee, and Board Risk Committee. This role partners with business units to achieve and sustain compliance with the Athene Model Risk Management Policy. It covers a broad scope of models used across the organization, including liability, investment, deal, pricing, financial planning, and derivative models. The role involves assessing models, evaluating their application and interconnectedness, conducting necessary testing, issuing findings, and proposing practical solutions to identified issues.
Responsibilities
- Oversee adherence to the Athene Model Risk Management Policy and relevant regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance and supporting reporting to management on the state of model risk across Athene.
- Facilitate the Model Risk Management working group, including scheduling meetings, setting agendas, coordinating cross-functional input, and tracking action items to closure.
- Build and maintain key relationships across the business to foster model risk awareness and a strong risk culture, engaging with functions such as Actuarial, Finance, Risk, Tax, Treasury, Derivatives, and Internal and External Audit.
- Build and maintain ongoing engagement with the business to identify new models or significant model changes and maintain the accuracy and completeness of model inventory within the Model Risk Management system.
- Actively manage the model inventory within the model risk management system.
- Provide oversight of independent validations conducted by internal or external subject matter experts, or perform independent validations in certain cases.
- Serve as an effective challenger to first-line model owners and developers.
- Oversee reporting on model risk to internal stakeholders (e.g., the Model Risk Management working group and the Operational Risk Committee) and, where applicable, external stakeholders such as regulators and auditors.
Qualifications and Experience
- Seven or more (7+) years of working experience with insurance actuarial, financial, or risk management models as a model developer or validator required, with knowledge of complex investment and financial markets desired.
- A bachelor’s or higher degree in Actuarial Science, Quantitative Finance, Risk Management, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field required.
- An actuarial designation (e.g., FSA, ASA) or CFA, PRM, FRM designation desired.
- Self-driven individual contributor with experience partnering with the business to execute validations under tight deadlines.
- Fast learner with strong analytical and technical skills, sound judgment, and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across the organization.
- Experience with US Statutory and US GAAP accounting and reporting beneficial.
