About The Role
The Director of Planning (Accessories) develops, executes, and communicates strategic merchandise financial plans that support the company’s financial, product, and marketing objectives. This role drives top-line financial plans from a divisional to a department/category level, strategically managing the business to maximize sales and margin while optimizing inventory. The position also contributes to brand initiatives and ensures all planning activities align with annual goals.
Responsibilities
- Create strategic financial plans that support the company’s objectives and brand goals from both top-down and bottom-up perspectives.
- Develop sales, gross margin, and inventory plans at the division/department/class level to support profit objectives.
- Collaborate with direct reports in planning and the merchandising team to align financial objectives with product opportunities.
- Lead the planning and merchandising team, using historical data and current trends to capitalize on opportunities and identify risks.
- Communicate opportunities and risks to key business partners, including merchandising, finance, marketing, visual, and brand leaders.
- Develop, train, and lead the planning team.
- Partner closely with the allocation team to execute product strategies at the store level.
- Partner with the Production team on projections and buy pass-offs.
- Weekly Business Management:
- Meet with planners to review weekly forecasts, category opportunities, risks, markdown recommendations, and inventory reflow.
- Ensure decisions are data-driven and create global action plans.
- Present “action points” to senior management and gain consensus on business approaches.
- Manage seasonal liabilities, inventory by source, and delivery performance at a divisional level.
- Guide planners to tactically manage liabilities and drive opportunities.
- Partner with Allocation on daily allocation strategies.
- Buy Review Prep:
- Review historical performance at the category and key item level with the planning team.
- Analyze performance by source, delivery, and category to develop future goals.
- Set pre-season divisional and departmental plans to support line development.
- Establish sales, margin, flow, and IMU goals prior to each delivery.
- Reconcile top-down and bottom-up forecasts before passing receipts to the merchant organization.
- Participate in buy reviews with merchants, planners, and allocators to ensure appropriate breadth, depth, and execution.
- Collaborate with lead merchants to align plans with product goals.
- Lead and facilitate buy finalization meetings, reviewing pre-season plans and identifying risks and opportunities.
- Managing and Developing Talent:
- Create a dynamic team environment that encourages collaboration and creativity.
- Lead the planning team to execute company objectives and business plans.
- Provide clear direction and manage details as appropriate.
- Identify top talent and support succession planning.
- Train, develop, and manage direct reports, offering consistent and timely feedback.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum 5-7 years of merchandise planning experience; 7-10 years of total work experience.
- Strong analytical and math skills.
- Project management experience.
- Strategic forecasting and financial planning expertise.
- Demonstrated experience in:
- Presenting and recommending strategies, building business cases.
- Driving business to exceed company plans.
- Leading and developing a team of at least 3 direct reports.
- Strategic forecasting for a multidimensional business.
- Assuming additional areas of accountability successfully.
- Influencing and negotiating at various levels.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, including presenting complex material in an organized and compelling manner.
- Proficiency in planning and allocation systems, as well as advanced Microsoft Windows applications.
- Resourcefulness and creativity to develop new systems and procedures for evolving business needs.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Out-of-the-box thinking to find solutions for demanding business requirements.

Pay
Pay Range: $147,500 – $199,200. Individual compensation will be determined based on qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant skills.
