About the Role
The Director, Medical Staff is responsible for the operational leadership, administrative oversight, and coordination of all medical staff functions within the assigned facility or facilities, including credentialing, privileging, peer review, and medical staff governance support. The incumbent ensures the accurate, efficient, and compliant administration of all medical staff processes in alignment with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards, including The Joint Commission, California Medical Staff Services Association, and applicable state and federal requirements. This role maintains responsibility for the development and implementation of medical staff policies and procedures, quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives, and ongoing evaluation of medical staff operations to ensure compliance and best practices. The Director provides direct oversight to medical staff services coworkers, including selection, orientation, training, performance management, and professional development. This position collaborates with the Chief Medical Officer, physician leadership, legal counsel, compliance, and administrative leadership to support medical staff governance, credentialing integrity, and organizational risk management. The Director reports to the VP, System Director, or Regional Director, exercising wide latitude of authority in managing facility-level medical staff operations with limited oversight.
Responsibilities
- Oversee operational leadership and administrative functions of medical staff services, including credentialing, privileging, peer review, and governance support.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, NCQA, Title 22, state, and federal requirements).
- Develop and implement medical staff policies and procedures.
- Lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
- Manage, train, and develop medical staff services coworkers, including performance management and professional development.
- Collaborate with Chief Medical Officer, physician leadership, legal counsel, compliance, and administrative leadership on governance, credentialing integrity, and risk management.
- Exercise discretion in handling sensitive information, including employee/student records, health/patient records, financial data, and strategic plans.
- Safeguard sensitive information and ensure compliance with data protection and privacy policies.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in credentialing medical staff.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a management leadership role.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive management responsibility.
- 3-5 years of project management experience.
- CPCS and/or CPMSM certification.
- Demonstrated understanding of medical terminology.
- Strong knowledge of Joint Commission (JCAHO), NCQA, and Title 22 regulations.
- Proficiency in MS Office products.

Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
- Dual certification in CPMSM, CPCS, or CPHQ.
- Bachelor’s degree.
