Director Med Surg

About the Role

As the Med/Surg Director at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, you will supervise and direct the delivery of patient care or care-related services on the Medical Oncology unit. This role involves working under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer and Associate Chief Nursing Officer to ensure quality healthcare in alignment with hospital policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives. You will collaborate across departments to create a system of quality healthcare and maintain current knowledge in clinical supervision.

Responsibilities

• Determine staffing requirements, interview, and hire personnel for the department.
• Develop and manage yearly budgets and conduct annual performance appraisals for all staff.
• Provide leadership in compliance with Joint Commission standards and safety regulations.
• Lead growth and development of new services within areas of clinical supervision.
• Act as a role model for professionalism and support the growth and development of staff through advanced education and certification.
• Engage staff in Shared Governance activities to strengthen individual and team growth.
• Responsible for strategic growth of the unit/service line.
• Collaborate with admitting/receiving departments, peers, and physicians to support continuity of care for patients.
• Update and create policies and procedures to reflect the scope of practice for clinical staff, incorporating the latest standards from HCA Clinical Services Group and accrediting bodies.
• Provide advanced education to medical staff to enhance critical thinking skills for post-surgical, oncology, and medical patients.
• Develop unit-based leaders such as Nurse Managers, Educators, and Clinical Nurse Coordinators for current and future roles.
• Attend internal leadership development meetings to promote professional growth for yourself and the department.
• Ensure compliance with Employee Engagement tactics and adherence to PRH Pillars: People, Service, Quality, Community Growth/Finance.
• Perform all other assigned duties.
• Meet regularly with staff through 1:1 Rounding, staff meetings, and huddles to ensure essential information is communicated effectively.
• Demonstrate understanding of Service, Quality, and Financial metrics, working to improve them when necessary, and provide transparent feedback to staff.
• Participate in and encourage involvement in community events both internal and external to PRH.

Requirements

• NH Licensed Registered Nurse or valid compact state RN license – Required.
• 4-year/Bachelor’s Degree – Required.
• 5+ years in a Med Surg setting – Required.
• 3+ years in a Med Surg Leadership Role – Preferred.
