Director, Laboratory

Overview

Directs the administrative and clinical operations of the Core Laboratory departments, including budget preparation, personnel, delivery of services, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance programs. Coordinates with the Medical Director for the delivery of laboratory services.

Qualifications

• BS or BA in Medical Technology or related field
• Master’s degree in Business/Health Administration or related field preferred
• Certification as a medical technologist, MT (ASCP) or equivalent required
• Ten or more years of experience in all phases of laboratory medicine with at least five years of supervisory/management experience in a highly complex laboratory required

Responsibilities

• Directs strategic planning and program development efforts through collaboration with the Medical Director and senior management
• Manages the department through appropriate clinical supervisors
• Coordinates quality and safety standards and activities of the department
• Coordinates the delivery of clinical laboratory services through appropriate clinical supervisors and with the consultation of the Medical Director
• Collaborates with the Director, Outreach and Pathology Labs to develop an integrated approach to laboratory facilities and functions
• Develops and implements annual and long-range strategic planning goals in concert with section supervisors, administrative staff, and the Medical Director
• Maintains communication and cooperation with members of the medical staff in coordinating their needs within the realm of the Department of Laboratory Medicine
• Interacts with the administrative staff of the physician group to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of professional laboratory services provided within the department
• Supports staff and encourages them to act with appropriate authority and responsibility for the work processes in which they are involved
• Supports the criteria-based performance appraisal system, completes performance appraisals in a timely manner, and provides feedback to subordinates
• Develops and implements programs that provide the recruitment, retention, development, and continuing education of staff members
• Guides supervisory staff in the management of situations relating to staffing, morale, work methods, procedures, and transfers and recommends action in all personnel matters
• Provides feedback, support, and mentoring to front-line supervisors to stimulate development of management competencies and promote professional growth
• Works with clinical supervisors to develop appropriate staffing patterns to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental operations
• Solves interdepartmental problems and facilitates communications
• Attends and participates in all management training and development workshops as required by the organization
• Maintains and demonstrates appropriate knowledge of laboratory developments through literature and attends on a regular basis relevant laboratory professional meetings
• Assists and participates in educational programs affiliated with universities, colleges, and technical schools that provide educational programs for individuals undergoing clinical training in the laboratory
• Responsible for the implementation of the customer service and guest relations programs within all areas of responsibility
• Assumes responsibility for the implementation and conformance of Memorial Health System’s Corporate Compliance and Ethics Program in all areas of responsibility
• Participates on various organizational committees and task forces as assigned
• Attends meetings of professional, civic, and service organizations as a representative of Memorial Health System as assigned
