About the role

The Director of Instructional Technology & Web leads the university’s instructional technology, web services, accessibility, and instructional design programs. Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President and Deputy CIO, this role provides vision, leadership, and operational oversight for a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategic plans, service roadmaps, and governance frameworks for instructional technologies, web services, and accessibility initiatives.

  • Provide strategic direction for the university’s learning management system (LMS), instructional technology platforms, and digital learning ecosystem.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory requirements to inform institutional strategy and service enhancements.

  • Lead the strategy and governance of SDSU’s web presence, ensuring a cohesive, accessible, and institutionally aligned digital experience.

  • Oversee web content management systems, digital platforms, and accessibility initiatives across the university.

  • Direct Accessibility Technology Initiative (ATI) compliance efforts and support adherence to ADA, WCAG, CSU, and other regulatory requirements.

  • Advance Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessible instructional materials across all learning environments.

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and professional development for a multidisciplinary team of web developers, instructional designers, accessibility specialists, and technology professionals.

  • Manage departmental budgets, procurement activities, vendor relationships, contracts, and software licensing agreements.

  • Maintain and monitor service metrics and operational performance to support strategic decision-making and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success designing, developing, and supporting secure, accessible, and user-centered web services, applications, and digital platforms.

  • Experience managing enterprise web platforms, learning technologies, learning management systems (LMS), or other complex digital ecosystems.

  • Strong knowledge of digital accessibility standards and regulations, including ATI, ADA Title II, and WCAG, with experience advancing accessibility practices across digital content and services.

  • Knowledge of instructional design principles, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and experience integrating accessibility, usability, and instructional design best practices into technology-enhanced learning environments.

  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships and work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and external partners to advance institutional goals.

  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, build consensus, and lead cross-functional initiatives.

  • Experience working in higher education or other large, complex organizations and supporting enterprise-scale technology platforms and services.
