Director Government Relations

This position is incentive eligible. Salary estimate: $175,988.80 - $282,880.00 per year. Factors such as skills, experience, and comparison to other employees in the role may determine the actual salary.

About the Role

As the Director of Government Relations for HCA Healthcare, you will assist in developing and implementing legislative strategies that support state and individual division and operational goals for the Virginia and New Hampshire markets. This role serves as a key advisor to Group and Division Presidents on business decisions involving interaction with state and federal government officials and agencies.

Responsibilities

• Communication and Relationship Building: Build and maintain relationships with state legislators, state agency personnel, and key members of the executive branch. Duties include direct lobbying, testifying in committees, preparing testimony, and developing talking points on issues impacting HCA.
• Coordination of Government Relations Efforts: Work with Group and Division Presidents to:
  • Develop and implement state legislative priorities and strategies.
  • Ensure government relations efforts align with operational goals.
  • Review and analyze legislative and regulatory initiatives that may impact the company.
  • Coordinate grassroots call-to-action programs to communicate the company’s priorities.
  • Develop and manage key legislative issues by soliciting analysis from relevant departments and communicating their impact.
  • Provide advice and counsel to company personnel in dealings with government entities.
• Trade Association Coordination: Interact with leadership of hospital associations, Chambers of Commerce, and other organizations on HCA’s priority issues. Represent the company on legislative committees, coalition initiatives, and PAC expenditures at the federal and state levels.
• Politics: Create opportunities for dialogue and exposure for HCA’s state leadership. Gather and distribute political intelligence on legislative races, opposition strategies, and regulatory changes.
• Grassroots Management: Foster an active Good Government Group (GGG) program with HCA facility employees. Recruit and train volunteer coordinators, develop programs, schedule legislative visits, and update GGG members on legislative activities.
• Resource Management: Provide daily direction and management of HCA’s in-state contract lobbying team. Coordinate additional contract personnel for government relations purposes (e.g., PR, reimbursement).
• Candidate Recruitment: Recruit and advise candidates for state and local office with an interest or expertise in healthcare.
• Campaign Consultant: Consult incumbent state legislators on healthcare policy and issues related to the hospital industry or impacting HCA.
• Team Management: Manage local government relations managers, oversee requests to the team, and provide guidance and direction.

Requirements

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive Government Relations or legislative affairs experience.
