Director, Global Trade Tax
About the role
The Director will play a key role in supporting and expanding the Global Trade practice within Alvarez & Marsal Tax. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor to clients on complex trade and customs matters, lead high-impact engagements, and partner closely with senior leadership to help grow and scale the firm’s trade advisory capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage client engagements across global trade and customs, including customs compliance, tariff and duty mitigation, supply chain planning, and risk management.
- Advise clients on U.S. customs matters such as classification, valuation, country of origin, and related planning strategies; experience with first sale for export programs is highly valued.
- Serve as a primary client contact on assigned engagements, delivering clear, actionable, and executive-ready advice.
- Oversee project teams, including scoping workplans, managing timelines and budgets, and reviewing deliverables for quality and consistency.
- Support business development efforts through proposal development, solution design, and participation in client discussions alongside senior leadership.
- Contribute to the evolution of the Global Trade platform by helping develop new offerings, tools, and internally scalable best practices.
- Mentor and coach junior team members, fostering technical growth and strong consulting habits.
Qualifications
- CPA or JD degree required.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in global trade, customs, or international trade compliance or consulting in a public accounting or professional services environment.
- Licensed Customs Broker is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience leading client-facing workstreams or engagements with increasing responsibility.
- Strong working knowledge of U.S. customs and international trade regulations, including compliance frameworks and risk assessment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex trade issues into practical business guidance.
- Direct experience with first sale for export planning and implementation.
- Exposure to customs audits, enforcement actions, or the design and execution of compliance programs.
- Industry experience in sectors with complex global trade footprints (e.g., manufacturing, retail/consumer, industrials, pharmaceuticals, technology).

Pay
The salary range is $165,000 - $200,000 annually, dependent on several variables including but not limited to education, experience, skills, and geography.
