About the Department & Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Global Decision Sciences & Insights team for a Director, Integrated Insights for Liver & Inflammation Pipeline. This role will drive primarily pipeline integrated insights (i.e., forecasting, market research, analytics) activities for liver and inflame portfolio.

Scope & Impact

Inflammation/Liver is a priority development area in Gilead. With the maturation of the inflam/liver pipeline and the recent/ongoing M&A activities in the inflame/liver portfolio, the need to provide commercial perspective on inflam/liver pipeline development increases significantly.

From internal pipeline perspective, we have a strong pipeline in disease areas including but not limited to HDV, IBD, SLE, Asthma, AD. In addition, with the recent acquisition of Ouro, there are more than 20+ indications that are under evaluation for development. This role will have a large variety of pipeline work to shape the future of Gilead presence in liver/inflammation.

This candidate will work close with the global marketing team, clinical team to inform critical commercial decisions as assets progress in their development cycles. The role will report to the Executive Director, Global Decision Sciences & Insights, Liver/Inflam/Established products & Portfolio capability.

Forecasting Responsibilities

  • Lead role to drive the inputs and assumptions for Inflammation/Liver pipeline products in both Latest Estimate (LE) forecasting guidance and Long range plan (LRP) forecast
  • Develop and maintain the global forecast model to reflect latest updates on market insights. Ability to assume full responsibility for accuracy and reliability of complex analyses with minimum oversight
  • Direct off-shore team to execute model updates. At the same time, expect to update model on his/her own in a timely fashion
  • Integrated insights generated from market research, patient journey work and other data sources to update the forecast assumptions for key forecast updates including but not limited to LRP, budget LE guidance, and any program strategic team decisions for clinical development decisions
  • Not an initial priority, but for products closer to launch, collaborate with local teams to understand the trends/drivers for short term forecast assumptions. Pressure-test local teams assumptions to ensure alignment and sharing of latest insights to drive consensus on assumptions with local business units directors and in some cases general managers
  • Ensure objective, insight-based forecast is delivered and communicated with a broad cross-functional partners. Be able to communicate the forecast findings in an executive-ready approach with minimum oversight. Focus on the recommendations, business implications, but at the same time, have the in-depth knowledge and ability to articulate the details as needed

Market Research Responsibilities

  • Create foundational market understanding for the therapeutic areas. Market research will likely span from pipeline to launch to inline needs
  • Key examples of market research projects are:
    • Pipeline: Treatment flow maps, target product profile testing/demand estimate, future landscape study
    • Launch prep: market segmentation, attribute/benefit testing, positioning and campaign development, etc
    • Inline (not a priority for this role): ATU, drivers and barriers identification
  • Conduct primary research: develop qualitative and quantitative market research studies with physicians, and patients
  • Manage vendors to determine appropriate research methodology, ensure project alignment to business objectives and guide execution and reporting
  • Examine research findings to understand data, key market insights and implications for Gilead
  • Develop clear and effective communication materials (e.g. reports, presentations) targeted to key audiences
  • Present and lead discussion of results and insights in a collaborative, efficient manner
  • Work with Global strategic marketing, commercial teams, Gilead asset teams to understand implications of market research and forecasting/analytics insights for Gilead's business, and develop plans to address these implications

Commercial Analytics Responsibilities

  • Drive the development and execution of global commercial analytics. Examples of analysis include but not limited to quantitative patient journey updates, patient profiling, specific claims/patient data analytics to inform forecast assumptions updates. Ability to assume full responsibility for accuracy and reliability of complex analyses with minimum oversight
  • Other examples of analytics can be business case development, profitability analysis, ROI analysis, analogue analyses, benchmark etc.
  • Direct off-shore team to execute analytics. At the same time, expect to update model on his/her own in a timely fashion and pressure test the accuracy of the analytics behind
  • Share and gain alignment on commercial analytics insights to local teams (e.g., US forecasting, US analytics, local affiliates) to ensure insights are adopted and incorporated in execution

Leadership Skills & Competencies

  • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking to know what commercial questions to be focused for pipeline decisions
  • Knowledgeable in scientific terminology in clinical development and solid understanding of commercial input needs to clinical development plan
  • Ability to right size the insights development depending on the pipeline situations
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interact cross-functionally, esp. with clinical, and development teams interactions, and at all levels of the organization to drive effective decisions and alignment
  • High attention to detail together with an ability to understand the 'big picture'
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with an ability to efficiently communicate technical information to non-technical members of senior management. Ready to present to senior management with the presence, ability to develop storyline, articulate recommendations, and develop the right level of written communications
  • Has an opinion, is a part of the team that decides on commercial strategy and is not just a provider of information
  • Proactive, self-starter with the ability to learn quickly
  • Strong project management skills - planning, prioritization, organizational ability, objective setting, meeting management and plan execution
  • Able to prioritize and utilize limited resources to manage multiple and/or conflicting requests from a variety of internal customers, manage peak workload periods and ad hoc requests. Agile to react and plan for changing priorities is required

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and eight Years' Experience OR Masters' Degree and six Years' Experience OR PhD and four Years' Experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or above
  • Experience in one or more of Gilead's core markets of liver diseases, inflammation, oncology and HIV preferred
  • Experience to support brand teams to drive growth strategy, preferably both local and global situations
  • Experience in specialty markets and in-depth knowledge of sales and marketing organizations and pharmaceutical data sources, e.g. IQVIA
  • Knowledge of MS Excel and business intelligence systems and tools, e.g., Microstrategy and Tableau to present quantitative data in graphical form is required
  • Experience in patience-based market/revenue modeling
  • Knowledge of and experience in forecast modelling techniques and the application to a particular business problem
  • Proven experience in developing and maintaining forecasts for similar products or therapeutic areas preferred
  • Prior experience conducting, analyzing, and communicating qualitative and quantitative global market research is required
  • Openness to adopt AI in the day-to-day work to improve efficiency in all aspects of integrated insights work
  • Passionate about the function and a natural curiosity to seek the truth with objective data and insights, and to solve complex problems

Pay & Benefits

The salary range for this position is: $226,185.00 - $292,710.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary.

This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
