About the role

The University of California, Irvine (UCI or UC Irvine) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director and Founding Dean, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The new school is under development and will be part of the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, which comprises the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, a program in population health, and the schools of medicine and nursing. The college is part of an integrated UC Irvine Health system that also includes UCI’s clinics and Orange County’s only academic medical center.

Responsibilities

• Build a world-class school partnering with the current Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences as the foundation, focusing on cutting-edge research and training in both clinical and basic sciences.
• Lead the development of an innovative Pharm.D. degree program.
• Manage the Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and collaborate with the Chancellor, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, other campus-wide vice chancellors, deans and department chairs at UCI, and with colleagues across the University of California system.
• Provide strategic vision for the creation and, ultimately, the operational leadership of the school.
• Address complex topics, giving special attention to promoting diversity and inclusivity while advancing scholarship, education, and service.

Requirements

The Founding Dean will have a research-focused doctorate and be eligible for appointment at a full professor level in an Academic Senate title in the school. Salary and benefits will be competitive, commensurate with the selected candidate’s background and experience, and includes access to faculty housing.

Qualifications

• Significant knowledge from diverse administrative and leadership roles.
• Experience in a large-scale or complex program, preferably in an academic setting.
• Successful fundraising experience with the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with donors.
• Strong, prudent financial leadership.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to represent the school in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.

The Founding Dean will hold a full-time, fiscal-year appointment in addition to an academic appointment in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and will report directly to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, Dr. Enrique Lavernia.
