As a direct report of the Vice President, Finance, the Director, Finance ensures effectiveness and compliance of the accounting and reporting functions for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA). This position is approved for remote work within the Continental United States only.

Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Oversight

  • Direct general accounting function, ensuring best practices for systems and procedures are documented and implemented in accordance with GAAP for all BBBSA financial/accounting processes.
  • Oversee the balance sheet and income statement, ensuring accuracy and timely reporting to stakeholders.
  • Review and manage monthly, quarterly, and annual closing reports focusing on data accuracy, correct project allocations, cash flow, and the minimization of adjusting journals. This includes bank and balance sheet reconciliations, payroll, aging reports, and corrections action plans.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial reports as requested, and present financial analysis to the VP, Finance and CFAO.
  • Review and approve transactions posted in Intacct and highlight data accuracy and integrity issues, following up with concerned parties to resolve outstanding issues promptly.
  • Prepare monthly risk assessments and highlight risk areas for finance leadership to consider.
  • Manage accounting, banking, and reporting systems access ensuring the right people have access to timely and needed information.

Policy, Audit & Compliance

  • Assist the VP, Finance in developing policies and procedures and ensure all assigned responsibilities are performed efficiently, meeting established timeliness and quality standards.
  • Assist the VP, Finance in implementing systems and processes across BBBSA functions to ensure expenses are managed in accordance with the annual budget.
  • Engage and partner with department leads and teams across the organization to ensure compliance with BBBSA accounting policies and generally accepted accounting principles in data processing.
  • Lead, prepare, and manage the annual audit document request list and schedules as requested by the auditors, ensuring an unqualified opinion.
  • Work with BBBSA department leads to provide support and reporting to ensure standardization of processes and approach.

Financial Operations, Enhancements & Planning

  • Establish and meet deadlines, providing consistent feedback to the VP, Finance on the status of deliverables, summary of actions taken, and planned next steps to effectively reach departmental goals.
  • Lead accounting department enhancement projects and deliver timely financial information.
  • Participate and lead in setting departmental goals in alignment with the organization's strategic plan.
  • Train and motivate the accounting team, ensuring staff have clear goals, tasks, and timelines.

People Management

  • Recruit, train, retain, and cultivate professional development of direct reports.
  • Create a dynamic, supportive, and effective team that is impactful across BBBSA and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Network.
  • Lead and manage resources (people and capital) that retain and cultivate positive, measurable success.
  • Monitor progress against performance targets; implement countermeasures as needed.

Culture

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of accounting experience required; nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • 4-6 years of direct supervisory experience required.
  • Expertise in Intacct – Sage software.
  • Non-Profit Accounting background.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated application of GAAP.
  • Federal Grants Reporting; Knowledge of Federal Grants Rules and Regulations.
  • Supervisory skills: ability to lead and motivate team members through performance management, engagement, development, and retention strategies.
  • Highly organized with the ability to set and manage priorities.
  • Ability to work independently in achieving results consistently on deadlines.
  • Excellent team working skills; ability to collaborate.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Qualifications

  • A degree in accounting or a related field highly preferred, or equivalent work experience.

Full-time, exempt position. Travel: Approximately 5%.
