Director Environmental Compliance

About the Role

The Director of Environmental Compliance is responsible for establishing, implementing, and overseeing corporate environmental programs, permitting, remedial efforts, and ensuring compliance with government regulatory authorities. This role drives strategy and oversees the implementation of environmental practices at all locations, collaborating with site EHS staff to support plant operations. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Environmental, Health, and Safety, this position oversees Environmental & Compliance professionals.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute a visionary "future-state" for environmental excellence and develop a clear, multi-phased strategy for its execution.
• Lead all corporate environmental initiatives, managing third-party vendors and external environmental counsel to achieve critical company objectives.
• Provide expert technical guidance and leadership to implement core compliance and sustainability programs (e.g., remediation, wastewater, regulated waste, SPCC, air emissions, sustainability strategies).
• Maintain deep expertise in Federal and state environmental regulations, evaluating and interpreting their application to operational activities.
• Collaborate with functional partners to establish robust environmental compliance systems meeting regulatory and stakeholder expectations.
• Evaluate and recommend state-of-the-art air pollution control technologies for continuous improvement.
• Prepare complex permit applications, calculate air emissions, and perform regulatory reporting, compliance, chemical inventories, and water discharge calculations.
• Act as the primary environmental resource for compliance, engineering, and operations staff, ensuring continuous environmental compliance at new and existing facilities.
• Monitor emerging environmental regulations and trends, developing proactive short- and long-term strategies for organizational readiness.
• Coach, mentor, and develop EHS staff and leadership in environmental programs, requirements, and risk management.
• Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in incident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Partner with Senior Leadership to conduct environmental due diligence on potential acquisitions.
• Act as the primary liaison with internal and external counsel and SMEs regarding complex environmental projects and regulatory affairs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (required).
• 15+ years of environmental management experience, including 10+ years managing people and engineering teams.
• Problem-solving using standard engineering/scientific methods.
• Ability to adapt to changing needs while maintaining a positive attitude and focus on client success.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills to build relationships and trust with stakeholders.
• Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills, including presenting technical information.
• Ability to motivate teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Intermediate knowledge of Google Suite.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Postgraduate degree in Environmental, Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer certification.

Pay

Base Salary Range: $153,000–$195,500. Individual compensation offers will be determined based on geographic location, experience, education, and qualifications.
