Director Enterprise Business Continuity
About the Role
Enterprise Business Continuity Division (EBCD) is a resource to help prepare HCA Healthcare to successfully protect patients, employees, communities, and assets in the face of emergencies by providing management with tools and guidance necessary for risk assessment, contingency planning, and disaster recovery. Our mission will be accomplished by coordinating efforts and improving communication enterprise-wide, providing leadership support for the Enterprise Emergency Operations and Business Continuity Planning Council, using technology to standardize and improve efficiency and management reporting.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage both the Clinical Continuity and Operational Continuity teams under the Business Continuity Division.
- Develop department goals and objectives, monitor progress, and adjust as necessary.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development to staff, including performance evaluations and career development plans.
- Clinical Continuity:
- Oversee the development, implementation, testing, education, and maintenance of the enterprise business continuity program by performing Clinical Impact Assessments (CIAs).
- Lead and oversee the clinical downtime program, ensuring effective management and timely resolution of issues.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive HCA Enterprise Clinical Downtime Strategy aligned with company goals and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate and manage the Enterprise Clinical Downtime Council activities, providing project management and recommendations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and subject matter expert during clinical downtime incidents, coordinating response efforts.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop educational curriculum and exercises related to clinical downtime procedures.
- Travel to facilities to understand challenges and successes of the Downtime program.
- Develop and maintain documentation, policies, and procedures related to clinical downtime readiness and response.
- Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and regulatory requirements related to clinical informatics.
- Collaborate with the BC Operational Continuity Team to align information, risks, and missions.
- Operational Continuity:
- Oversee the development, implementation, testing, education, and maintenance of the enterprise business continuity program, including:
- Business impact analysis (BIA)
- Minimum Viable Company (MVC)
- Business continuity strategy development and planning
- Risk evaluation and controls
- Hazard vulnerability assessment (HVA)
- Emergency response and operations
- Stay informed on company-wide initiatives and evaluate their impact on the business continuity program.
- Partner with business units to support operational resilience strategies.
- Promote enterprise business continuity (EBC) awareness and preparedness across the company.
- Monitor regulatory changes and ensure compliance, addressing gaps as needed.
- Facilitate the development of standards for business continuity plans and ensure documentation meets those standards.
- Interact with business unit managers regarding business continuity plans and follow up to ensure needs are met.
- Oversee the development, implementation, testing, education, and maintenance of the enterprise business continuity program, including:
- Serve as the business owner for AssuranceCM, the company’s enterprise-wide business continuity planning system, including:
- Understanding system capabilities and ensuring efficient use.
- Overseeing system reporting and maintaining vendor relationships.
- Assisting with contract negotiations for service, consulting, and support.
- Conduct regular crisis management exercises to test business continuity plans and identify areas for improvement.
- Oversee integration between technologies supporting EBC (e.g., AssuranceCM, StormGeo, HCA Alert, HCA CodeReady).
- Develop and deliver compelling presentations and training on business continuity and crisis management.
- Oversee the development of educational materials related to AssuranceCM and business continuity planning.
- Serve as the liaison between HCA Healthcare lines of business (e.g., HealthTrust, Parallon, HCA Lab Services) and the Enterprise Emergency Operations Group (EEOG).
- Assist lines of business in developing and executing emergency preparedness and business continuity planning exercises.
- Serve as Co-chair of the Emergency Operations and Business Continuity Council and Co-lead of the Clinical Downtime and Recovery Council.
- Serve as the EBC team lead when the Enterprise Emergency Operations Center (EEOC) is activated, including 24/7 support during significant disruptions.
- Facilitate after-action reviews following major events causing clinical or business disruptions.
- Ensure all department playbooks are up-to-date and available to division and facility teams.
- Oversee updates to EBCP training and educational content on company intranet sites.
- Collaborate with the BC Clinical Continuity Team and CSG Downtime Team to align information, risks, and missions.
- Assist the VP and AVP of Emergency Operations with other projects as needed.
Requirements
- More than 7 years of experience (healthcare preferred).
- BCP certification (e.g., CBCP or MBCP) or equivalent preferred.
- College graduate; master’s degree in business or healthcare administration preferred.
- Understanding of business continuity planning, emergency management, and disaster recovery assessments.
- Prior experience in Business Continuity, Risk Management, Business Recovery, and/or Disaster Recovery.
- FEMA Certifications (ICS 100, 200, 700, 800) preferred.
- Ability to be on-call during non-office hours to support the Enterprise Emergency Operations Center (EEOC).
- Ability to travel up to 25%.
