Liberty Mutual Insurance · Boston, MA · 1 wk ago
Full-time

Liberty Mutual’s Specialty Product Design and Modeling Team drives the science of pricing for Specialty Lines products (Landlord, Umbrella, Condo, Renters, Specialty Vehicles). Using advanced predictive analytics and statistical modeling, the team builds and refines rating programs that deliver profitable growth. Beyond modeling, the team shapes strategy, identifies key variables, sources data, and designs rating programs that provide a genuine competitive edge.

Responsibilities

  • Frontier Program Representation: Serve as the primary Specialty Data Science voice on Liberty Mutual’s cross-functional Unified Insurance Platform (UIP) transformation. Translate deep expertise in Specialty rating programs into clear requirements to ensure the science of pricing is preserved, correctly implemented, and positioned to evolve on the new platform.
  • Condo & RV Programs: Own end-to-end pricing design and modeling for Condo and RV programs, ensuring best-in-class segmentation and market competitiveness.
  • Research & Analytical Capacity: Advance the science of Specialty pricing by researching new modeling techniques, evaluating novel data sources, and improving segmentation. Contribute to high-impact modeling and analytical work across the Specialty portfolio.
  • People Leadership: Manage, coach, and develop a team of 3–5 data scientists, fostering a high-performing culture where collaboration and growth thrive.

Key activities include:

  • Representing Specialty’s requirements on the Frontier program, ensuring they are documented and built correctly across a multi-year transformation.
  • Becoming the subject-matter expert on all Specialty rating programs, including coverages, rating structures, data definitions, and pipelines.
  • Connecting cross-functional teams (Product, Technology, Delivery, Actuarial) to keep work moving and surface problems early.
  • Researching emerging modeling techniques, testing new variables, and identifying data sources to sharpen competitive edge.
  • Communicating complex technical work clearly to senior leaders and cross-functional partners.

Requirements

  • Energized by complex problems and comfortable navigating both model details and executive conversations.
  • Proactive mindset—identifies what needs to happen and drives execution without waiting for direction.
  • Thrives in ambiguity and rapidly masters new domains.
  • Hands-on modeling skills (Python, SAS, Emblem) and personal lines insurance experience.
  • Ability to collaborate and achieve alignment across large, cross-functional teams.
  • Experience building and sustaining high-performing team cultures.
  • 6–8 years of relevant insurance experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in predictive modeling tools (e.g., Python, SAS, Emblem, Excel).
  • Strong understanding of data sources, rating systems, and Specialty Lines business context (lines, systems, pricing plans).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex information clearly—verbally, visually, and in writing—across varied audiences and stakeholder levels.
  • Value-driven mindset with strong awareness of business context and impact.
  • Proactively challenges the status quo and identifies opportunities to improve team and organizational capabilities.

Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of predictive analytic techniques and statistical diagnostics of models.
  • Expertise in predictive toolsets, including highly technical tools.
  • Proven ability to lead and drive projects to completion through others, including prior experience managing talent.
  • Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely across diverse audiences.
  • Ability to establish and build relationships within and outside aligned functional areas.
  • Experience presenting to senior or functional department leaders or executives.
  • Broad knowledge of business drivers and market context.
  • Value-driven perspective with understanding of work context and impact.
  • Advanced degree (Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or relevant field) with 5–7 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor’s degree (scientific field) with 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Insurance or financial services industry experience preferred.
