Director, Critical Care (ED/ICU)

About the role

The Director of Critical Care (ER & ICU) under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), is responsible for ensuring consistent high quality patient care in the Critical Care Units. This position assumes 24-hour administrative responsibility for the management of all critical care nursing service functions.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for the Emergency and Intensive Care Units, overseeing all nursing services.
  • Develops and implements department plans, including performance improvement activities and compliance with current regulations.
  • Oversees the Emergency Disaster Preparedness program and defines standards for the Emergency and ICU departments.
  • Monitors compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and hospital policies for patient services, environmental safety, and personnel safety.
  • Manages the department’s operational excellence, ensuring the delivery of quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Manages human resources to promote positive employee relations and ensures proper utilization of organization’s financial resources.
  • Communicates departmental, organizational, and industry information to staff and attends all required Safety Training programs.
  • Participates in service, departmental, and hospital-wide committees as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred, Master’s degree in Administrative Services preferred (with focus on management).
  • Five years of Emergency Room experience with progressive management responsibility, preferably at a hospital with a Level 1 or 2 Trauma program and a Pediatric Emergency Department.
  • Five years in an administrative management role, preferably with a volume greater than 40,000 visits/year.
  • Current and valid California RN license.
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, and MAB certifications.
  • Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) preferred.
  • Knowledge of human resource management, program development, fiscal management skills, and familiarity with regulatory and accrediting agency standards.
