DIRECTOR, CONSTRUCTION

About the Role

The Director, Construction ensures cost-effective and timely delivery of quality capital projects aligned with the District’s goals. These projects include new construction, comprehensive renovation, facility-related improvements, and other educational enhancements, covering construction, commissioning, change management, and closeout.

Responsibilities

• Supervise staff and consultants responsible for delivering school construction projects.
• Develop and execute a system for managing construction and commissioning of all capital projects.
• Coordinate projects from pre-construction through procurement, construction, and closeout, with a focus on a robust commissioning process starting at schematic design and continuing through transition to operations.
• Implement quality assurance and continuous process improvement programs, including evaluations of staff, consultants, design professionals, and contractors, accountability systems, and knowledge management.
• Meet routinely with stakeholders to communicate project and program status, gather feedback, and build relationships.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive change management process in collaboration with the Director of Program Controls, including presenting changes to the School Board.
• Ensure adherence to schedule, budget, and financial controls.
• Develop and maintain departmental procedures and policies; train staff and vendors accordingly.
• Travel routinely to schools and work sites to review project status, resolve issues, and communicate with stakeholders.
• Provide outstanding customer service and use positive interpersonal communication skills.
• Ensure compliance with Board rules, federal laws, and regulations.
• Collaborate in developing and monitoring the department’s budget, expenditures, and inventories.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in construction management, architecture, engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in construction management within the last twelve (12) years, including at least two (2) years in a leadership role overseeing a medium to large commercial, industrial, or public capital construction program.
• Demonstrated success in completing construction projects on time and within budget, adhering to contract specifications, school board codes, and regulations.
• Computer skills as required for the position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, or a related field.
• Ten (10) years of experience managing major facility renovation programs, with primary responsibility for construction and closeout phases.
• Experience managing capital construction for an educational institution.
• Valid registration as an Architect, Licensed Contractor, or Licensed Professional Engineer.
• Bilingual skills.

Physical Requirements

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.

Pay

Hourly rate ranges from $47.64 to $93.12 per hour, determined per the Collective Bargaining Agreement/Handbook language.
