About the role

The Director of Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) oversees clinical documentation integrity processes across all hospitals in the Healthcare System. This role serves as the primary subject matter expert and resource for CDI practices, ensuring accurate documentation in patient medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Improves the accuracy of documentation through physician education.
  • Serves as a liaison between the medical staff and CDI staff regarding documentation and query issues.
  • Plans and conducts ad hoc CDI consultation and educational sessions.
  • Evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of internal and operational controls.
  • Determines staffing needs and budgets for each facility.
  • Develops and implements provider documentation strategies.
  • Analyzes and trends KPIs such as Case Mix Index (CMI) and Severity of Illness (SOI).
  • Provides guidance to CDI staff on MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and shifts in case-mix and severity levels.
  • Coordinates efforts with the CDI software vendor and IT to maintain and enhance CDI software.
  • Drives optimal use of CDI technology software and reporting capabilities.
  • Generates and distributes reports to executives, clinical leaders, and operational leaders.
  • Collaborates with CDI Auditors to ensure compliant query practices.
  • Addresses ongoing CDI education needs based on audit findings and coding guideline changes.
  • Facilitates joint continuing education sessions with coding staff.
  • Provides leadership to the CDI staff and chairs weekly CDI meetings.
  • Develops CDI work plans addressing documentation challenges.
  • Works with coding leaders to evaluate the CDI-coder reconciliation process.
  • Ensures compliant queries following AHIMA and ACDIS guidelines.
  • Provides guidance to the CDI Manager in preparing performance evaluations and applying disciplinary action.
  • Approves hiring, training, education, policies, procedures, and makes budget recommendations related to CDI operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management
  • CCS - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • RHIA - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  • RHIT - State of Florida (FL)
  • Registered Nurse Compact License (RN LICENSE COMPACT) - Compact RN Multistate
  • Registered Nurse License (RN LICENSE) - State of Florida (FL)

Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of CDI management experience
  • Equivalent work experience may substitute for education requirement: Associate’s degree plus seven (7) years of CDI management experience
  • High school diploma plus nine (9) years of CDI management experience
